View Full Version : HP OfficeJet 6500 printer "offline"
Printer works well enough except for some reason, at various times, it goes "off line" and then is a PITA to bring back online. Doing so usually involves rebooting the printer, the 'puter, both, etc. Anyone else have
such a printer and problems? Yes, I've googled ... and read ...
I've come across this a few times with wireless printers ... it turns out that some wireless printer release their IP address when they go into sleep mode, so try assigning a static IP address ... or you can disable the sleep mode feature.
I have an HP OfficeJet 6310, it is wired ethernet, no wireless, but it would occasionally do that. So I don't think it's just a wireless problem. The power button would be blinking, indicating it was sleeping, and pressing any button on the control panel would usually wake it back up. But sometimes even that wouldn't work as it would wake up but still be offline, and I'd have to unplug it for a few seconds, then power it back up.
The first thing I did was uninstall all the HP Software. I don't need it, HP's software really sucks. It's a heavy burden with questionable benefits. You can still use the card readers, fax, scan, and print without it.
Just download the drivers only from HP's site, and don't install the software that came with the printer. Unless you want the HP monitoring, Easy Share, etc. I don't use any of that myself.
Your HP network printer has a web page admin, like a router, that you can access with your browser using the printers IP address. Or you can use the host name, for mine that was ///HP72DCB1
Go into the printer admin and set a static IP address. I also went into my router and set that address as reserved for the printer, with no lease expiration. The printer admin webpages also show you printer status, estimated ink levels, network settings, and you can scan, fax, etc from there. Most of the things the HP software provided are there in the printer admin interface.
After I uninstalled the HP software, and set up a permanent address in the printer and router I haven't had any problems since. I also discovered that I can still scan from any of my image editing programs like GIMP or IrFanview without the HP scanning software. Just select "File>Acquire>Twain" and your printer (scanner) will show on the list of available devices so you can scan right into the program.
Good luck !!
Great Stuff! Thanks for sharing!
I am sure I will get my *day* in the HP grinder... so now I know who to call!
Thanks all for the information.
Searching the "help" gives no indication how to keep the damn thing awake, only that it will go to sleep.
A static IP might be the ticket. As for the sucky software, I must confess it does seem a bit over the top and I wonder why it is so loaded with questionable usefulness.
I forgot that HP has a Network Diagnostic utility that may be of help to you in fixing your problem, just launching the utility (does not install) usually starts the printer and computer communicating again.
The file name is HPHNDU.exe and you can get it here ...
