Can someone explain bullet grains?

Stupid questions perhaps, but

I know that grains is a measure of weight, but how much does a grain weigh? Do grains apply to the projectile only or the entire carteridge?

Good question.
A grain is a weight measurement. There are 7000 grains to a pound. Your reloaded cartridge may contain 7.6 grains of powder and be loaded with 124 grain RN bullet.
A grain can also mean a single kernel of powder.
