View Full Version : Help me decide....
First 1911 purchaser here. I've narrowed my choices down to two and thought I would consult the experts here before making a purchase:
Budget: $1100
1. STI Trojan
2. Dan Wesson RZ-Heritage
Now, I'm not a huge fan of FCS (would rather keep it looking more classy) but am partial to SS/Hard Chrome. OTD the DW is only going to run me $60 more than the STI Trojan while having the SS finish and no FCS which is why I was even considering it. However, I am not willing to pass up the better firearm strictly for aesthetic reasons. I realize also that later on down the road I can send my Trojan back to have it hard chromed if I choose. I am open to other manufacturers if you can recommend one I may have overlooked that is perhaps better than the two listed. At this point I think I'm settled on the Trojan but wanted to get some second opinions first. So, what do you think?
I like the Trojan better.

I would take the Trojan over the Heritage every STI I've ever seen have been top notch.
I vote Heritage. FCS are fugly !

TRP Stainless!
STI builds guns to run. I see more of them at matches than any other 1911.
But they are ugly. Very ugly...

That's a far cry from your standard Heritage.

No doubt. :)
Looks aren't the Trojan's strong point, but I've seen worse.

Neither. Save your money and get a Glock21SF. 1911s are over-priced fossils.
J/K. I'm a big fan of DW, but I'd get the Trojan.

To be fair, you're showing the side of the slide that doesn't have a giant condom ad on the side :tongueout:
I don't think they look bad, but too bad you can't pay an extra, say, $50, to have the rollmarks left off the thing.

Just make sure you are always on the far left stall at the range.
DW Herritage FTW.
personally, the Trojan is FUGLY; adjustable rear sight, huge FCS

Good Lord guys. I'm usually the one complaining about a 1911's looks. :)
I honestly feel the Trojan has enough of an advantage as a shooter to overcome what it gives up to the Dan Wesson in appearance.
The Trojan really feels at home at the range.
In fact, I'm making it my December avatar. :tongueout:

While I agree the DW definitely is more aesthetically pleasing, I don't want to choose a pistol based solely in that regard (although I must admit it's tempting). If I go Trojan (which it looks that way) I'll be getting it w/ out the adjustable rear sight.....I'm just not a fan of them. Nice looking heritage though Wade . Question though, as I've found it difficult to tell from pictures alone. Is the finish on the Heritage more brushed looking or is it matte and easily marked like DWs offering in the Valor is? Assuredly, no matter what my choice I'm sure either pistol will make me a happy camper.
PS: That STI looks beautiful as well bac !

The Heritage's finish is brushed, like the old CBOB.

The Heritage looks a little different than this pic now. It has Chuck's Tier one sights on it, and he ball cut the slide. I sent my payment to him Monday, so I should have them home soon.

Wade, with all due respect, posting that pic as a testiment to the Heritage is the equivalent to me posting a pic of my Morris in a Colt Series 70 thread. :animlol:
I don't know the details of that build, but it looks like the only thing that's still Dan Wesson is the slide and frame. ;)

Actually Brian, the Heritage is STOCK !! Well except for the sights, the bushing and the MSH.

I didn't pay too much for that one. The black one in the background was about 2.5 times as much !:whistling:

OK, fair enough.
It looks like there was a good deal of metal work put into it though. :)
While we're being honest, your beautiful HC Trojan with presintation grade grips doesn't represent what most people find when they go looking for a STI at thier LGS .:tongueout:

Hey its all factory original.
The grips are simply the standard thickness version needed for the ambi safety. :)

Yeah, that is straight up stock +$300 for the factory HC. Switching to standard grips is a no-charge option. Same with fixed sights.

Well, the ambi safety is extra and the thin grips don't work with the ambi.
