View Full Version : SA Confusion - EMP Discontinued?

Hey everyone, my father called his friend who is an FFL dealer, and long story short, he said that 12 different distributors are telling him the EMP has feeding issues and they refuse to order anymore. Furthermore, he (the dealer) apparently called SA and they confirmed that they are stopping production of the EMP's due to this issue.

Now, when I heard this I immediately was appalled. Naturally, I called SA to confirm this, and the lady I talked to said she was unaware of this, and that the current backorder is 6 months.

So I'm asking you guys...has anyone heard any information about this? I figured the reason I can't find any is because the RO was just released and they temporarily weren't running any EMP production. Unfortunately, it's hear-say, however my dad's friend (the dealer) is a good friend of his and I don't think he would lie...

I'm just so confused! Why would SA build the EMP from the ground up (after scrapping the .45 GAP), just to later scrap it for "feeding issues?" :dunno:

Edit*** Upon further investigation, it seems that SA told him that they are not producing any EMP's, "at this time". This leads me to believe they are NOT going to permanently stop production, however as my initial hunch suggest...they are stopping because of RO production. I also hope they will look into the feeding issues, as I know Quack and quite a few others have had to adjust the tension on their extractors. Hrmmm...

I have never heard of this - the gun has been out long enough that short of just a bad batch, the series of guns as a hold are reliable. There were somewhat of a fair amount of complaints when the gun very FIRST came out. But I don't really see complaints about it anymore.

I wouldn't believe it - but it is strange that this answer is popping up from "12 different distributors"

EDIT - I see your additional comments now..

Springfield does build models in "batches."

I would say that whoever is saying that is trying to push you something else because the backorder, as SA told you, is 6 months and they don't have one in hands to sell it to you.

I recently purchased a 9mm and it has been 100% reliable!!!

We have heard absolutely nothing!! We deal with 5 different distributors and would have heard something and just talked to one today about an EMP. Sounds just like gun shop banter to me. They are extremely hard to get and thats why many may think there discontinued. SA runs there builds in batches so when distributors are out, there out for A WHILE!

Yea this really sucks...trying to find/get my first 1911 and my first carry gun, and things aren't going so well. However, I could go anywhere and get a plastic gun. :whistling:

If you want one and dont want to wait, just go to GB! There are people on there who are pricing them very well! And no wait! I have wanted one for awhile, if i had to pay retail for one, i would order one in a heartbeat off there.

Gunbroker has lots of them. Budsgunshop has .40 and you can reserve the 9mm.

They produce guns in different runs. so the EMP is not running right now and they just got done with the RO. so for the guns made in IL, i would think that they are probably going to run the TRP or Operator line next since those seem scarce right now and it's fairly similar to the RO in regards to fit.

Springfield had feeding issues in the very early run (before #4000) where the feed ramp angle was wrong. the current common issue is the extractor tension being too tight, but (just like Kimber) you only hear of the problems and not all the ones running problem free. my EMP is 2 years old and in the 7xxx range. i bought it about 2 years after the release, and they are in the 16,xxx range now (4 years after it was released). with that said, i don't think it's going anywhere

Looks like Buds has one in stock (in 9mm) so I'm going to call them tomorrow...I hope I can get the military pricing as well. If they still have it, I might be making a trip to Buds tomorrow! Anyone want to go!? :whistling:

And the only problem with GB is that I don't really want to pay the (usually) higher cost, plus shipping, plus FFL fees. So that's why I'm trying so hard to find one in person. Thanks for all the help though!

Pro Armament had one last time i was there. If you call and talk to Drew, tell him i (Don) sent you over (i bought my Guardian from him). I've sent a few people over to him looking for DW's.

Olde English has one listed on their website. price is higher, but you could see if they can do any better.

Yeah, it's all price and demand though my friend. I paid under $900 OTD for mine LNIB with 150 rounds through it (extra mag included).

I would do it again in the heartbeat, put in the same situation. It's a great gun.

Yea, that's why I'm a bit cautious about paying (what I think) is too much. $1200+ is just too much imo, because I KNOW I could get one cheaper, but I would have to wait. I certainly don't need one right now, but the sooner I get it, the sooner Quack will stop posting pics.

This EMP took a different direction from the others that I've built. The client wanted to modify this pistol for concealed carry and anything that didn't further that mission was left off the table. This EMP features some new Harrison Design goodies that I'm especially proud of and that you'll see more of on future builds.

The rear sight is a prototype of my HD-004 Extreme Service rear sight that fits the popular .495 x 65 degree cut. Production of this item will begin shortly and will offer this sight in both standard height, +.050" taller version for short pistols and both a T1 (single dot) and T2 (2 dot) night sights. The night sight variants will feature "Deep Dots" using Trijicon lamps set in below flush by appr. .060" to limit the stray "glow" from the lamps off to the sides while giving the operator normal lamp glow. Thanks to Ned Christiansen for turning me onto this and allowing me to incorporate them into my product line.

The Extreme Service slide stops are designed and manufactured from the ground-up to offer a rugged, durable slide stop that will serve your needs for operation, regardless of weather, temperature, gloved hands or wet hands. The thumb shelf has a unique arched shape to offer secure purchase to your thumb, should you need to manually lock back your slide either administratively, or during a malfunction clearance. CNC machined from high alloy stainless and carbon steel forgings from one of America's most renowned firearms manufacturers, Extreme Service slide stops are then heat treated to give a long life. The Extreme Service slide stops feature a consistently dimensioned .200" diameter pin and a lock back lug that is correctly shaped and sized to fit and work properly on correctly dimensioned 1911 receivers. Available in blued carbon steel and stainless steel, in both .45 as well as .38/9mm/.40/10mm.

Enough of the shameless plugs, let me mention the rest of the EMP goodness afoot here. The bottom rear corner was treated to a RoundButt to keep it from digging into the palm of your hand. I raised the front strap and machined scallops into both the front strap and the new VZ Grips aluminum main spring housing. Speaking of VZ, the grip panels are a new design that John and the guys at VZ are making for me. I call them Carry Groove grips and the design's foundation was to make a purpose built concealed carry grip that does not snag cover garments causing printing, wear jacket linings, yet gives up nothing to other grip designs in terms of your ability to grip the pistol.

The factory beavertail was retained due to the poor weldability of the 7075 aluminum frame. An EGW bar stock thumb safety replaces the factory ambi unit. Fire control is handled by my Extreme Service ignition group and solid long trigger. And yes, we did have to pop for just a little touch of bling with the deep muzzle crown. A Carry Bevel job finished everything up for the all-matte black DLC finish from IonBond. And I shortened a couple of mags for flush fit. All of the parts mentioned here are available from my web store, located at https://shop.HarrisonCustom.com
Thanks for looking!

Well...update, I ordered the EMP from Buds! Unfortunately, since they didn't have any in the LE/Military "section" I wasn't able to get the military pricing, however it's on it's way to me. Bud's was great to deal with over the phone, and now I understand why so many people enjoy doing business with them!

So...that's all good, but I already know it's going to John for some work probably come next summer/fall. I already have a list going in my head. :whistling: I still have my out-dated Harley I still need to do some things to as well come this spring. That will take priority.

Here's what I'm thinking about right now...

-Install tritium lamp in dot configuration with white ring in non-serrated sight blade
-Machine slide, supply & install Harrison Design Extreme Service HD-004 sight set in plain black. (or 10-8)
-Serrate rear of slide, extractor and ejector 40 or 50 lpi, to match rear sight blade
-Re-crown muzzle flush with barrel bushing to deep, polished configuration
-Supply and install EGW barstock slide stop
-Checker front strap 20 lpi. Includes high grip & truing front strap with smooth, snag-free lower border
-Supply & fit ( ) Ed Brown Tactical or ( ) Wilson 6N extended thumb safety
-Carry Bevel Package, hand bevel all sharp corners and edges, blend rear of slide to frame and adjacent parts
-Countersunk slide stop pin
-Round butt frame and MSH

I'm sure there are more things I would add/drop...like a solid short trigger, and refinishing in something all-black, like park or ion-bond (or black t). And then of course some type of grips, etc. Anyway...just what I'm thinking right now.

Quack
12-07-2010, 13:43
the HD-004 sight is similar to the 10-8 rear sight. I like the 10-8 because it's a "U" shaped cutout in the rear sight rather than a square cutout. a .140" wide notch + XS 24-7 front sight would be a nice setup. I saw this on one of the guns Drake has done and the dot sits perfectly in the 10-8 cutout.

if you want your gun looking pretty for longer, get something other than Black-T, which is soft and scratches/wears quicker.

polizei1
12-07-2010, 13:49
Well, like I said, that wouldn't happen for quite a while...so I would have plenty of time to research different finishes and things. It's just a basic list with things I think I would want, based upon my very limited knowledge of 1911's. And yea, I do like the 10-8 rear, and it would be cheaper! The HD rear is $230!

Hokie1911

Don't get me wrong...I am a HUGE fan of the EMP, but for that kind of cheddar I would take the same cash and get a 9mm Wilson CQB Compact.

I was thinking about that...but I can't drop that kind of money right now, nor would I want to. Being so expensive, I probably honestly won't even do anything to the EMP. I HATE ambi safeties, but even that will probably stay (I don't know how and don't have the tools to change it). Oh well. Also, I really like the 3" small guns, and if I get another 1911 sometime after this, it will be a KC because I've always wanted one.

Edit* I just ordered 3 additional mags Quack. I don't think I need 7 mags right now, and I did just buy the gun after all. Should be here in a few days. The guy at Bud's said it comes with 2, so 5 mags should be fine for a while. I'll have Log do 2 of them, and I might have to order a few more later if I get into IDPA.

So with that said, I'm impressed so far with the fit and finish, even though I don't know much about 1911's. It seems very tight and hopefully I'll be able to shoot it tomorrow to see how it does.

And I would like to thank all of those who have helped me out, especially Quack, he's been a huge help to me! Now I just have to send my mags to log, get a Beltman belt, and get my CCW permit!

I'm an hour south of Wright Patt. I'll actually be there Sat/Sun for drill, as we moved and our base is there now (Marine Corps Reserve).

I tried the extractor test, and the round just falls out...but I'm not exactly inclined to try and take apart a gun I just got and haven't even shot yet. I don't have any experience either, so I'm 100% sure I'll screw it up. Crap.

Edit* I tried the extractor test with my XD9 and it holds the round nice and tight, so I'm a bit worried. I loaded a mag and manually cycled a few rounds and it works that way...but I'm going to shoot after work today so I guess I'll find out if it's going to work or not.
