Ok reading post by DRC767 and Glock2740 and a conversation with Paul earlier has me thinking about the Springfield Custom Shop. I love the stuff that you guys show off here from Springfield but how do they compare to the other semi-customs? Are they in the same price range? Why pick Springfield against EB,WC, etc? Is it just like buying a Baer over a Wilson type thing? Just personal choice? Don't get me wrong I would love to have a Pro or Mini Pro one day. These are just some questions that were going through my head.

In my opinion, they're as good or better than all four major semi custom shops (Baer, Brown, Nighthawk, and Wilson).

Custom Shop guns are probably over 12months. You have to remember that they build a bunch (40+) of Professionals a month as well as guns sent in to the Custom Shop for work.

they will build it, you just gotta call/email them.

someone on TOS talked to Dave Williams and Dave said that he can build one for them. on local shop had one earlier this year and i went back a few days later to buy it and it was gone. THis same shop also had Custom Shop XD's on hand which are pretty nice too.

this is what the shop had, except the one they had used Novak sights.

They must have had a recent price increase. I am showing the MSRP for the Custom Carry starting at $1,915 and the TGo-1 at $3,367. Still within reason when comparing to the big Semi-Custom houses. I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination when it comes to the SA Custom shop, but the couple pistols I have bought in the last couple weeks have been pretty damned impressive......granted, they are both Professionals, but I have no reason think the build quality of anything coming out of the shop would not be the to the same high standards.

but how do they compare to the other semi-customs?

I would say that they are built just as well as most guns in the price range. Mine is tight but very smooth and has the attention to detail that you would expect.

Are they in the same price range?

My Custom Carry 9mm was $1950. The Pro models that I have priced were around $2500-$2600.

Why pick Springfield against EB,WC, etc? Is it just like buying a Baer over a Wilson type thing?

Yes and no. They have a different build philosophy that Baer does, but I do not think that I would say build-wide they are "better." I have owned a couple of examples from each of the major semi-custom makers except for only owning 1 Brown. I went with Springfield due to a combination or looks and excellent customer service and warranty. In addition the price was cheaper than all of the other makers to build the gun I wanted.

I really like my Springfield Custom Carry and it is a hell of a deal considering it the price puts below most other makers with guns of comparable features. The only real nagative IMO is the long wait if they build a gun to your specs. Mine was 7 months which was not too bad, but you also cant typically pick up a Custom Carry off the shelf. You can usually find a Pro pretty quick if you are diligent or Tactical Black gives you a heads up :wavey:

http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv239/BlayGlock/Springfield%20Custom%20Carry/SpringerCustomCarry001.jpg

IMO the best deal in the semi-custom world at the moment is a Guncrafter No Name purchased from Dave.

What's the difference(s) between the Custom Carry and the Pro for the $500-800 price difference?

How does the Custom Carry stack up against the TRS, which is about the same price?

GJ1981

What's the difference(s) between the Custom Carry and the Pro for the $500-800 price difference?

It's just the features, they are the same internally. The Pro gets checkering, ambi safety, Black-T, magwell, etc.

How does the Custom Carry stack up against the TRS, which is about the same price?

I give the Baer the edge, unless you want lots of options. You get checkering standard where it's an option on the SA. The finishes are comparable, blued vs parkerizing. I think Baer uses a better barrel, but that's just my opinion.

So you can get your Custom Carry checkered (for +$200 give or take) if you wanted? I wouldn't want ambi, magwell, etc...

That just seems silly that a gun costing close to $2k would have no FS checkering. Hell, it's goofy that a $1,100 EMP doesn't have it, but for $2k, that is inexcusable.

Yep, you can order it how you want. The prices they have for custom work are they same for options on ground up builds, or at least were when I ordered my CC's.

FYI, if you want a particular set of parts, Brown GS, Kart barrel, Wilson hammer, etc. they will build how you want.

http://www.springfield-armory.com/custom.php

I agree about the checkering, that is why I think the TRS/Baer CC is the better deal.

Yep, the Professional is just a Custom Carry built to the FBI's spec's

my build cost more than BlayGlocks due to checkering, 10-8 parts, magwell, Ed Brown safety.

Thanks.

I'll certainly put the Super Grade at least on par with the TGO when it comes to fitting, quality, and attention to detail. The Super Grade may even be slightly better. However, the TGO is finished much better than the Super Grade, in my opinion. Seriously, Roguard on the SA vs. Armor Tuff on the Wilson?

As for the Classic Custom, I like the way the slide is finished with the polished flats, but the TGO is just the better 1911 all around when it comes to fitting, attention to detail, tightness, etc.

Just my opinion of course. :wavey:

Ok, so I am looking at the Custom Shop pricing. Why would I spend $1,645 on the TRP Package for a MilSpec/GI when I could just buy an actual TRP for $300 less? :dunno:

because that's the way it's priced and they have to do the stuff after rather than running all the machining before assembly

1 . Install TRP barrel & bushing (bull barrel system in pistols shorter than 5”) ($290)
2 . Factory skeletonized delta hammer ($50)
3 . Low mount Novak style rear sight with tritium inserts ($180)
4 . Dovetail front sight with tritium dot insert (Dovetail & tritium insert not available on ported V10 handguns)
5 . Extended ambidextrous thumb safety ($100)
6 . Beavertail grip safety ($100)
7 . Adjustable lightweight aluminum trigger ($50)
8 . Full length guide rod with heavy duty recoil spring ($50)
9 . Flat checkered mainspring housing ($75)
10 . Polished feed ramp; throated barrel ($50)
11 . Tune & polish extractor ($50)
12 . Deburr pistol internally ($50)
13 . Standard carry bevel sharp edges of pistol ($100)
14 . Machine checker front strap, 20LPI ($200)
15 . Tune trigger pull to 4 .5 lb ($100)
16 . Front cocking serrations ($100)
17 . Refinish as needed (carbon steel pistols-Armory KoteTM; stainless steel-satin finish) ($150)
18 . G10 black/gray grips (don't have a price, but say $75)
19 . Springfield 2 piece mag well-Additional $100 charge
20 . **No TRP markings added to pistol in this package .**
21 . Inspect & test fire for function ($100)
22 . Stainless steel 1911-A1 pistols may require an additional fee, determined upon inspection

so add that all up and it's $1970 if priced separately.

I think they also tighten the slide/frame fit ($190)

1.) Because that someone is lucky enough to only have to pay $1,400 for a Kobra Carry.

2.) Because that same someone would have to wait until February or March to be able to do that or pay $2,400 for the same gun now.

3.) Because that someone also thought it was a better idea to get the polymer now and carry for the next 4 months since they couldn't get the Brown until then anyway.

4.) Because that very same someone will have the money to pay of the Brown by 4 months even with the HK purchase so it's irrelevant.

5.) Because someone wants to sucka.

plus the one i bought was sitting for a while and the manager that i was talking to said he needed to move it. He asked what it would take for me to buy it and i said $2000 just to see how close he would get. so we finally agreed to $2300.

The Professional Operator that i bought (at another shop) had is listed at $1599 and i got them down to $1525, while not as great as the TGO-1 price drop, it was still a steal considering they go for ~$2600+ new.

I sent a Colt in to be customized by them a decade ago. $1700 later it was everything I wanted at that time. Now I would have done 1/2 the work and ended up with almost as good of a gun. They did do a really good job though. The wait back then was only a couple of months.
