View Full Version : Ion Bond vs Melonite vs Black T questions

So I have another 1911 thats needs refinished, my Pro has Black T which is great for corrosion control, but bad for wear resistance. My question here, taking the wear resistance out of the equation, which really is the better finish, as in for corrosion control, and lubricity?
ETA, what are the pros and cons of each?

your thinking of the wrong kind of chrome. I guess Joe is going to have to show you what it looks like.
Melonite would be the tops for your criteria. IB is very good for wear, but I have heard it is nowhere close to Melonite for corrosion resistance. IB also doesn't have much lubricity.
There are downfalls to the Melonite. The biggest is the temperatures during the process.
I've read reports claiming Black-T keeps protecting even if it wears off, but if I see bare metal, I feel it's unprotected. I remember seeing a post with a Pro with slight rust on the slide.
If the color of the pistol isn't important, I'd say NP3/NP3+ would give the best overall value.
OP also look at Regard//NP3
Of what you have listed, they should all perform well.
Black-T is used on submarines, so that should give a good indication on corrosion control

I know, one is industrial chrome and the other is "pretty" chrome, just being a :whistling:

Gotcha:dunno:, so how do you clean a chrome pistol? Maguires?

Don't know about that one......The exterior of US Subs is a very highly classified, sound protective, acoustic absorbing material called anechoic coating. About the only thing it may have in common with Black T is the color. :)

That looks like a Mexican drug lord owns it
Yesterday:supergrin:
I've read some negative reports about Black T having wear issues, but I've yet to see any wear on my Commander.
(And I saw the internet picture of Black T wear on someone's gun before I decided to have the Birdsong's do the job.)
It would seem that surface-to-surface wear would appear more quickly than surface-to-holster wear, yet there are no signs of any wear between the slide and frame rails.
And I hate to admit it, but I carry it in a plastic Fobus holster which I thought would've caused more wear than leather.
No wear any where yet.
They must have done a good job on yours, I was seeing wear inside of 10 draws from an MTAC.
Or maybe mine is just defective...wouldn't surprise me with the issues I've had with my pistol.

My StreetBob is pewter denim to match my stainless Milspec 1911. If it is one thing I hate is a 1911 that clashes with ones Harley.
