I posted this recently in a private forum, but at Silent_Runner's request am reposting it out here where she can see it.
I met my friend who posts on GT as Silent_Runner in 1991. She was working in the ICU of the hospital where someone I really cared about was admitted. We became friends when no one else there would tell me the truth, that the person admitted wasn’t going to live. I had a lot of respect for her because of that. Over the next few years we weren’t close, but would talk to each other when we saw each other. One day I ran into her at the grocery store and she was upset and nervous looking. We chatted a little and then she confided to me that her husband was having serious mental issues and she’d asked him to move out, but was worried about her and her children’s safety. She told me she had a shotgun, but didn’t know how to use it all that well, so I offered to show her what I knew.
I could tell she needed a friend, so I started coming around more after that. She went to night shift, and I was already on nights at my job, so I started going to her work and meeting her in the parking lot a couple days a week because I got off before she did. Her husband had started threatening her and I’d witnessed that a couple times and she got a restraining order. We all know what that’s worth, right? I was pretty scared of him, too by them. She didn’t know, but I almost always had a gun in the car or with me when I came around her.
The morning in question I met her as she came out to the parking lot and we walked over to where we were parked. She opened her car door and was getting in when Asshat husband comes hauling ass into the parking lot right toward us. I went running toward her car and ended up standing in the open door of her car blocking Asshat from getting to her. I had drawn an 8” barreled 44 magnum and held it behind my back less than 3 feet from Silent_Runner, who crapped a brick at the sight of it. I stared down Asshat with my large caliber induced courage and told him to leave her the hell alone and not come around again. Much to my surprise he backed off and left. After he was gone I put the gun away, but couldn’t tell if my friend was more scared of me or him. She finally calmed down and ended up being glad I did what I did. Then while we were sitting in her car she asked to see the gun, so I got it, unloaded it and handed it to her. Picture a petite lady holding a S&W 629 8-3/8". It was almost comical.
Oh, and he left her alone for a good while after that. :whistling:
