I can't explain it, other than I feel a need deep in my gut to own a Coonan .357. I had been looking at originals, but now the company is putting out a new model. With night sights and two mags, it's $1,379. I was going to get a Springfield Armory Socom II .308 next, but that plan may have to change now. And before anyone else says it, yes, that feeling in my gut COULD just be gas. :tongueout::supergrin:
Has anyone heard anything about the new models? I don't think they've been out very long at all as I checked the same website just a few months ago and it said they were still in development.
Any info is appreciated!
Thanks,
Sarge

I never heard of them but it sure is an interesting piece. I wouldn't mind a little more info on them myself.

I remember them from years back. I emailed them for some more information. A realiable, well built 1911 in .357 Magnum would be pretty dang cool!!!

I agree. I remember the name, but don't remember much about the gun.

You are correct I had one sent it back once to get figured out and it was about 95% after that .

Loading the cartridges in the magazine is the most time comsuming part. They have to be stacked each rim on top of the other or you get a goofy malfunction. Everything was well made and fitted, trigger was exceptional.

I want them to make one in 10mm magnum on a six inch barrel. It would be hard for me to resist.

They shoot well ,I did some feed polishing on the one I had and it was 100% reliable with magnum loads.38 specials wouldn't cycle it and I never got a lighter spring so they would.

Eventually traded it back to the same buddy I got it from and I'm sure I could get it back

Excuse the ignorance, but I'm relatively new around here......
I take that to mean that you're a dealer and have a connection with them? I'm definitely interested in picking one up, that is not in doubt. I've waited for 26 years to have one, so I'm not letting it slip by again. If you can PM me your contact information, I'd like to talk to you. I'm a few weeks away from having the cash together, as I just paid off the new Les Baer that's being built.
Thanks,
Sarge

I have an original in mint condition. I don't include it with my 1911s, so you guys may never have seen it posted before.

...talk about a fun pistol to shoot! They're big and heavy, but very well made.

Thanks for those pics! That looks very nice! Like I said, I've wanted one of these for 20+ years, and now that they are putting out new production, and I can actually afford it (moreso than when I was saving lawn mowing money $4.50 at a time to buy my guns  ) it seems like destiny has stepped in and pushed me over the edge. I plan on ordering one in a few weeks.
Glad to hear you like the one you've got. I wonder if they changed anything from the originals, and if so, what?
Thanks again!

Thanks. I do love mine. I only put a few mags through it, but it was 100% reliable.

Good luck with your order.

I believe the new models are functional identical, though I wouldn't be surprised if the stainless was a bit better quality. Stainless for guns has continued to improve during the time they were out of production.

Mine is a Model B, which differs from the Model A in trigger function.

I'm not sure whether Coonan will be building the smaller Cadet model again, but I suspect they will.

One of the original smiths who helped develop the Coonan when they first came out is a member on another board I've found out. There is a great thread with him just spilling out information about them along with pictures of original staff etc. He's in on the new production as well, although in a diminished role. I've asked him about the Cadet and whether there are plans to come out with one or not. Hopefully I'll have an answer shortly.
Man, I can't remember being more excited about a pistol, other than the very first one I ever bought. This is going to be cool.

He already answered my question - they DO plan on coming out with a Cadet version, but it will be under a different name, possibly "Compact". He doesn't know the timeframe yet however, as they have to get the 5" line production at 100% before turning attention elsewhere.
I can already see a few of these in my future. This is going to get expensive.

Hey Brian, what year did that gun come out in?
Is this one of the first 1911 types to have an external extractor?
Looks well made.

Developement started in 1977. I think the first pistol came out a couple years later.

Coonan went bankrupt in 1994.

It is well made and certainly one of the first with an EE.

I really think there needs to be a 10mm Magnum Coonan -- almost the same size as a 357 at the rim and on the length. I know am just dreaming.

My dream has one with a 6 inch ported barrel.

Here's a shot of my original Model B. I traded for it from a buddy a few years ago. It was previously unfired.

A pic snipped from a video this past summer. 125gr JHP, lotsa Win296. Coonan's love fullpower (see max) loads. That round is 1800+ fps

A pic of Dan Coonan himself at a local zombie shoot earlier this year

Holster I had custom made

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y148/MrVvrroomm/holsters/IMG_1212.jpg

There's surprisingly little recoil from the fire-breathing beast. It's a 3lb gun fully loaded.

I just got an email from Coonan yesterday. They are shipping their first run of the "new" pistol this week. They want the pre-orders to be in the owners' hands by Christmas.

I just looked at one today, I received a email on my phone from a local gun shop and to my surprise they are now a Coonan Dealer and I was just a few miles away. I also have wanted one sense the 80's and now it looks like its on my short list for 2011. They were asking $1260

I'm really not sure, but I imagine the materials used will be better. Stainless for firearms has improved quite a bit over the years.
