View Full Version : Stupid question?
After recently discovering brownell's thanks to you guys, i noticed that you can basically build a 1911 from the ground up. To buy a frame & slide do they have to ship to an ffl? Otherwise you'd have a gun with no numbers? I know it won't be cost effective but i'd kinda like to pick out peticular parts & put one together.
Frames have to be sent to an FFL, everything else can go straight to you.
That's what i figured, just wanted to be sure. Thanks!
Yes, FFL for the frame.
I suggest some books and DVDs first, it is building, not just assembling; parts must be fitted to each other in a particular order for the gun to work and be safe. Brownells has some good stuff about how to to it in the tech section. It isn't like an AR15 which pretty much bolts together. Parts will have to be mated by hand with files and stones and then tested for function. You can get mated pairs of frame and slide from Caspian if that helps.
Not to discourage you, many people do it, but it is possible to get in over your head.
Well, 1911forum is down this morning or I would give you a link to someone who built his own 1911. It's an incredible amount of work. I'm not doubting your ability, but surely do a LOT of research before you even think about doing this.
It's not very difficult but it does take some training and a few basic tools.
Thank you all for advice. I didnt think i could simply assemble it but i'm sure it's gonna be tougher than i expect. I just love tinkering with 1911's & think it would be a rewarding thing to do.
Once you build your own 1911 you will never want to shoot anything else.
