With the great help of GT's own DRC767, I have just placed an order for the new Coonan Classic .357 magnum pistol. I chose fixed serrated night sights and 3 magazines.
I know Dave (DRC767) is probably well known by you GT old timers, but I am still hooking screen names to actual people, so to find a helpful dealer like Dave right here on the board is great. He was great to deal with on this pistol!
I really need a list somewhere correlating screen names and real people. This was brought to my attention late last week with a situation that could have become a big misunderstanding very quickly, but was handled well through pm to the amusement of both myself and the other party.
Anyway, Coonan has given a 6-8 week shipping estimate. That's still a few weeks before my Baer Custom Carry should be done, so it works out well. I'll be posting pics once it arrives.
In my research of the "old" Coonans, I found that they were pretty reliable, and overall, quite well liked by their owners. The only real complaint seemed to be the stainless used in fabrication was a little soft, resulting in some cases of galling. Hopefully they have upgraded the metallurgy on the new ones and this is ancient history. I'm planning on eventually getting the Hard Hat treatment done to it, so it's not an issue either way for me.
I'm excited about this! It's like getting a favorite toy from when you were a kid but never got for Christmas. Can't wait to have it in hand!

I figured I would just order one for myself while I was at it....... .357 Magnum 1911 sounds cool enough to me!! Funny story about Sarge's order....In a moment of unclear thinking, I asked him if he wanted to upgrade the grips on his Coonan. What the hell was I thinking? :)

A friend of mine loves the .357 magnum round. He shoots his Ruger single-action and Marlin lever-action weekly. He's been wanting to get a 1911. I'll have to tell him about the Coonan.

Congratulations I have been looking at those for a while now and hopefully will be able to get one soon. I love my 1911's and I already reload for my .357 revolver......just need to break down and get the Coonan.

That's really cool Sarge !! I remember seeing those in the " Modern Gun Value " books when I was a kid . I thought it would be neat to have one to go with the Colt Trooper MKIII my dad gave me at the time.

Well, according to DRC767 I may need to look at the fancy walnut.
I have no idea yet. It will probably have a few sets to choose from once it arrives.
It seems like there is some interest in this pistol around here......Once she gets here, I'll be sure to take some good detailed pictures and get a shooting report up.
Thanks!

I had a friend of mine make up a holster for my original Model B. He does fantastic work. The grips were made by another friend.

Jim over at C5 leather is a personal friend of mine, so I have a feeling I'm set for holsters when it arrives.
It looks nice, thanks for the pics!

A friend just sent me a picture of a new production Coonan that is in his local fun store. Nice bag, but the pistol itself looks quite far ahead of yesteryears production finish. I don't see any rough edges anywhere. The TS and slide release could use a little polishing, but the overall look is more refined. Pretty cool!

Looks great

The stainless should be better. Whether they're built to the same quality level remains to be seen.

Sarge - I just bought a pair of Coonans last week - from the original owner, in the boxes, never fired, claimed he never cycled the slides either!

I was asked by a friend to help a friend of his value his collection so he could sell them. When I saw the Coonans I decided if I could afford them I would buy both...Well $2K later, I own both. Its winter here in Michigan but Tuesday I will go to the range and shoot them both! I have read a lot about them and look forward to shooting them. I just got two after market magazines for the Cadet; from a former Coonan employee; they fit well and I suspect they are going to work well. Here are a few photos of them:

The Cadet is an early frame; and used 1 screw to hold the grip panels. I know you make grips Sarge - I'll post some photos of the under side of the Cadet grips if you are interested. Just think how nice these would look with some scrimshawed ivory grips!

Never heard of a Coonan until this post and then one popped up on the local classified: http://listings.zidaho.com/ZIdaho%20Classifieds/6165174/clicknbuy.aspx?networkview=False&catid=OO46h&pcatid=OO46&procid=24afc793-4d60-4e1e-9b81-57c6c2453925

cwo - Congrats man! Those are beautiful! I suspect you're talking about "Kur", right? He's been VERY helpful to me with information and such. Very nice guy too.
My ordered Coonans are behind schedule for some reason. They were supposed to be in last week, but hopefully I'll hear tomorrow when they're going to arrive. I can't wait.
I'd love to hear how your new pair shoot. I will certainly pick up the new "Compact" when they put it out. I missed picking up a new in box Cadet model myself by FIVE minutes. Someone was a little quicker on the phone than I was.
Let us know when you get them to the range, and thanks for the pics!

Well THAT'S certainly different. I didn't even notice that the Cadets didn't have a lower bushing in them. I guess I was too busy drooling over the yummy brushed stainless goodness. :whistling::supergrin:

Kurmudgeon (Joe) suggested that the back of the Cadet grip used wood to hold the bottom of the grip in place; imagine my surprise to find aluminum...as long as it works.

I will shoot them Tuesday then you can really drool...

A friend of mine shooting my Model B yesterday. Two 7rd mag dumps. I've got a couple of "homemade" magazines that I'm just getting around to function testing. The first mag dump didn't lock back the slide, the second was a good run.

Watch in 1/2 speed if you can. The rings of fire are kinda neat.

The absolute best part of Saturday's range session: There were two other "big" guns on the range. One was a big strappin' young lad with a Desert Eagle .50AE. The other was an older guy with a DE .44mag.

Their thunder was stolen the first time my buddy squeezed one off with my Coonan. Yeah, I might have filled the cases to the top with powder, but that's what the Coonan loves.

It was my buddy's first time with the .357mag autoloader. It's always fun watching someone for their first time.

True.

Everyone knows the Desert Eagle and they expect a huge blast, but the Coonan always makes people curious. :)
