View Full Version : How many spare magazines for a 1911?

I know in a lot of the Glock-only threads, there were some individuals suffering from what can be diagnosed as MAS- Magazine Aquisition Syndrome. I remember seeing threads where people would post pictures of their 50+ 15-round Glock magazines. I guess I can see it from the point of view that another Assault Weapons Ban-type legislation may make those collections more valuable.

That said, how many mags do you guys keep around for your typical 1991 gun?

more than 2 per gun. And since mags are interchangeable with single-stack 1911, they tend to work on all, w/ the exception of an officer mag in a gov't/commander frame.

Unless the zombie apocalypse is upon us...I am good with one in the gun and a backup. I honestly don't see a need for any more than that.

I only have one 1911, but i have 15 mags for it. Definitely not needed, but i like to have a bunch loaded up BEFORE i go to the range so i dont have to reload every 8-16 shots. Ideally, i would like to have enough to be able to shoot 200 rounds without reloading.

All my handguns (1911 included) and most of my long guns primary function is competition and secondary function is for self or home defense. I don't really plink or strict target shoot. It is match or match preparation. I try and run my guns a lot and have complete confidence in them because of it.

Based on that for any handgun 7 magazines is the minimum. I want to be able to get through at least 2 or 3 stages without having to worry about reloading them. For ones I use the most I have enough magazines that I can get through a match 5 stages USPSA or 7 stages IDPA.

as much as you can, but bare minimum of 3. i'm not sure how many mags that i have sitting around for the 1911. i know i still have 20+ mags for 9mm Glocks, and i only have 1 (Glock) left.

I believe in a minimum of 6 for each gun....

Now, I have 5 Berettas with 18 mags total. But, I like to have at least 6 mags.

A 1911 mag wouldn't be affected by another AWB - but after going thru the AWB with just two 17 round Glock mags as my only hi caps, I make sure t o have enough mags for every gun.

I do enjoy loading up over 200 rounds in mags before I go the range to shoot 1 of my Berettas :)

I too am a believer in a minimum of 6 per gun. As for my 1911s, what caliber?? I have 9mm (9 and 10rd), 38 super (9, 10 and 13 rd), .40 (9 and 10rd), 10mm (9 and 10rd), and .45 ACP (7, 8 and 10rd) magazines, flush fit and extended. :faint:

I have about 50 1911 mags but I shoot IDPA, USPSA and 3-gun. Mags get dented, things wear out, seams crack.

I have 6 9mm 1911 mags for my 9mm 1911. And, I had 6 for my 45 ACP Ed Brown, but I am down to 5 now. I needa to buy 1 more.

I had issues with 1 CHip McCormick power mag. It's gone back to the factory 1x, and they only replaced the follower and spring instead of the entire mag. I'm having the same issue of the follower getting stuck, so I think the body is out of spec. I just tossed it this time and will get a Tripp Cobra mag in 45 ACP next month. I have four of his 9mm 1911 mags, and I love them.

I also used his rebuild kit on two 1911 mags someone gave me a while back.

Here are the ready accessible ones / once I use regularly. I also have some carry mags, new ones stored in wrap, then there is the junk mag bin... which reminds me I also have some 11 rd .45s.

Yeah, there are 3 more of those in the Junk bin with cracked feed lips. Those mags have a LOT of miles. Long ago when I started shooting IPSC, the local ranges didn't cut the lawn very often. You'd be surprised how well they helped finding your mags after a stage. Today, most the ranges are much better kept up.

I wouldn't criticize anyone who has a stash of extra Glock magazines, there was a time not to long ago when they weren't legal and people were forced to use reduced capacity magazines. That scenario could present itself again at some point in the future, even a more restrictive one with say a 5 round limit. Therefore it is prudent to have lots of extra mags.

The same philosophy can be used to necessitate acquiring 1911 mags, mags themselves could become regulated, taxed, serialized, etc. States like CA could easily not allow internet sales of magazines or sales of magazines without background checks as a continuation of their de-legalization of firearms legislation.

There are also recreational advantages to having lots of 1911 mags, if you go shooting somewhere in the desert or country without a table, etc, you may find it easier to carry a bunch of loaded mags rather than stop and reload everything. When I go to my indoor range I only bring 2 mags per gun because I don't want to spend $ on ammo that quickly!

I think the minimum is 4-6 mags per gun. With 1911s I have a variety of mags, from high quality range mags (Wilsons) to high quality SD mags (Wilson ETMs) to mid quality range mags (ACT, MecGar) to low quality came with the gun will not be used mags (Kimber).

For my officers framed gun I have maybe 15 mags.

For my govt models I probably have over 30 by now. I can't keep track because when I get a new gun they count towards the total. That and I experiment with just about every maker of magazine out there. It probably equals about a dozen per gun. When Colt gets around to shipping me that Commander I ordered as part of the armorer's course I went to earlier this year the per gun mag level will drop to les than 10 per. That reminds me I need to bug Seth at Colt again.

1911 mags are not nearly as durable as glock mags. I think I have about 15 right now. I think over the last 20 years I have probably deep sixed about the same number.current made mags are better now then back when we just used old gi surplus mags, but they do tend to break.

nice collection Bucky!

I've got 5 Tripp Cobra's (3 newer and 2 older), 3 McCormick Shooting Stars, and a stock RIA mag.... will probably be getting some more of the Tripp's in the near future....

I also have between 6-10 for every gun with exception of 1911's. I probably have a total of 20+ 1911 mags. Im pretty sure the # 6 just came about from shooting IPSC and needing that many. Either way thats just what I go with. The only gun that I dont have that many for is my EDC(HK P7) and that is mainly because i wont pay their high prices so i'll stick with the 4 i have until i can find a good deal again

28 for my .38 Super 1911's
25 for my 9mm 1911's (some 9rd, mostly 10rd)

I have more if you count 2011's :)

A minimum of 3 for my duty SIG 229R and BUG PM9 as required by my LE agency's firearms policy. For competition guns I have at least 5 standard capacity and 5 extended capacity magizines (Limited and open divisions). I try to keep a few extras in my bag in case I have to pull a magazine out of service due to a feeding problem.

VietVet1968
12-25-2010, 09:31
My minimum per 1911 is four mags even though I have more than that.
I'm not a competitive shooter and don't shoot in any leagues of any kind. I visit the range once every 3-4 weeks and fire all the mags because I keep them loaded all the time.

I like to have 5 x 8 round magazines for my one 1911. The "new" follower Colt 8rd magazines work well in my particular pistol, so I have it pretty easy. I have several more magazines for it, but I use them mostly for convenience at the range and don't consider them "production" ready hardware.
