Hi guys,

On black friday I bought a new Dell laptop.
it's supposed to have a 500 gig hard drive
well, when I click on computer the OS (c:) hard drive says:

423 GB free of 451 GB

I have nothing installed on it besides what came from the factory so where are my other 49 GB?

I willl probably never use up all that memory but if I paid for 500 GB, I want 500 GB.

Happens all the time, with all manufacturers. I wouldn't worry about it.

the OS has to live somewhere... so does a recovery partition if there is one... there could be other partitions reducing the total from 500GB also.

Recovery partition + rounding down of how they calculate a GB for marketing purposes.

First off it's storage not memory. RAM is memory, disk is storage.
A megaByte = 1,048,576, not 1,000,000. It's a binary number.
So the drive maker uses megaByte = 1,000,000 but your O.S. sees it as 1,048,576 and thus reports a smaller number of megaBytes.

This has been going on for ages and was the subject of a law suit against Seagate in California a while back. In that state it's required to report the actual size that an O.S. will see. But even that is kind of silly as Linux ext2 and ext4 will see a different size as a formatted disk. FAT 32 and NTFS will be different too.

Enjoy your new system.

They had to leave them at the factory due to budget cuts.

I have the same 500gb drive from Dell. The OS is on your system along with a hidden restore partition.

That's funny. Thanks.

Ever buy something in a box and theres lots of space where there could be product? But it's just air? They tell you it settles. I say it's so they can cheap out on the product and not make you think you're getting screwed. Happens all the time. welcome to pay less, get way less.

Yeah but hard drives are sold by volume, not by weight :animlol:
