I have 1 NP3+'d gun and 3 hardchromed guns. I absolutely love HC, as most of you regulars know. And I have a NP3+ finished LB TRS, also, as most of the regulars know. The question is, which one is your favorite? I love both. Both look great and both are as tough a finish as I will ever need. I just want to hear pros and cons on both. I do think that I will have my next revolver done in NP3+, but have some friends who I've talked into having their guns hardchromed. Let's hear some pro's and con's/

I was hoping this was a report thread since I don't own either. There is a guncrafters model 2 at the local gunshow with hard chrome that I have been eyeing.

There was a good thread on this earlier:

Seems the hard chrome finish can have variable results depending on body chemistry if you plan to conceal it. I'm no metallurgist, but that seems to make sense to me. Have you considered Melonite?

My favorite finishes are IonBond, then NP3+, and beadblasted stainless.

This one was hardchromed and just recently got a hardchromed Wilson 30LPI MSH as well as a Wilson Speed Chute that was added this week and was hardchromed to match. I left my camera at work, so it'll be another week or so before I get pics up, but it turned out GREAT!

HC for sure. Me personally my favorite is a nice black 1911 but I was thinking the other day about a 10mm CQB Hardcromed.

I don't own an NP3+ finished gun, but I do like the NP3 on my TGO.

I guess it really depends on who does the hard chrome.

That would be awesome. Especially with no FCS and a naked slide.

If done properly HC is one of the best finishes out there and will last a REALLY long time. I will say that my most recent custom has the NP3+ on it thanks to inspiration from DRC, and it's drop dead gorgeous and slick as all get out. It's a very impressive finish and well worth the money IMO. I don't see any reason for anyone to be hanging their head if they have either finish.

I like hard chromed visually. But if I was going to carry it IWB, I would not go with hard chrome. OWB or on duty, I'd do hard chrome, as it resists holster wear fantastically.

But IWB, I'd probably go with cera plate. It's almost like NP3, but not quite as slippery to the touch, which makes racking the slide easier.

Not a 1911, but this slide is Cera-plate

Robar will coat a gun on the inside and outside with NP3 excluding bore and springs. Is that the same for hard chrome, including interior of the gun and small parts, excluding springs?

I think for my purposes I would go with NP3+. The combination of protection, rust resistance, and lubricity are perfect for a pistol that would be carried in a duty holster while working, and IWB off duty. My pistols have been exposed to pretty much every weather phenomenon known to man over the years. As I recall, the original NP3 finish from Robar is also used to protect fittings on North Sea oil rigs, both from the salt water, and from sticking together in the frigid conditions. Sounds pretty good to me.

I had a Colt xse (with some changes I did) hard chromed by Ron Mahovsky 3-4 years ago and it came out perfect. He nickle plated then hard chromed the aluminum frame and it was then 65 on the rockwell scale, I swear by it for aluminum frames and mahovsky had good prices along with great work.

Bobtail, bushing, thumb safety, beavertail done by me....hard chrome by Mahovsky. Wish I still had it, must build a lwt.:

I prefer the look of hardchrome but the usefulness of NP3 for ease of cleaning and low coefficient of friction.
