I had the chance to buy a 500A for just a 100 bucks so I did. Got home and during disassembly I find that it doesnt have a SER. # after a search I found that it was made before 1968. My idea was to put a short barrel on it and have it parked, but does this gun have any collector value and would I ruin it.

Also while breaking down I noticed that the internals are the same as my other 500A (made late 1990s) have they changed that little and where did the 500 B/C/ECT. come in?

Go ahead gimme your ideas and thoughts I bought it as a project so I will not be offended.

I don't think there is much if any collector interest in the Mossberg 500. Even if there was yours would have to be in mint condition to add a lot of value to it.

I thought all Mossberg 500's had serial numbers, but a bit of searching says that pre GCA68 they did not. Also the internals should not be identical, prior to 1970 they had a single action bar instead of the dual bars of today.

the action bar is a single bar but all the internals look the same.

I mean if you can I think parkerizing is awesome especially on nice american shotguns. I would really like my 930 SPX Parkerized or DuraCoated in parkerized type finish. And although I really have a Benelli Supernova Tactical as my next purchase (it was my next until I splurged on a gift to myself Bushmaster) I really also like the 500/590/590A1 i have seen a few I Lliked.. You should just hook it up how you like, be it new stock, forend, if you like pistol grip only / PG stock / traditional -- wood/synthetic / etc.

All roads lead to rome here, dont spend too much cause I would think its a beater shotgun? Maybe make it a Cruiser , or better yet, throw a PGO stock, a heat shield, and either the RoadBlocker BMG muzzle brake or the RollingThunder "Stablizer" on the end, and you are instantly badass.

Well today I just got another 500A rec. so I can have three setups I think the old single bar will be set up with a 28" barrel for trap, I have and 8 shot that will be defence and the new rec will be a 18.5 barrel classic setup ( wood stocks)

I bought an 870 with the hopes of making a tactical shotty but then decided it was too much money. If I'm going to tactical something it is going to be a better platform like an AR. I'd honestly start with a better platform than an older model 500. Those were the models that had problems. I'd search for a 870 or newer 500 then go from there.

Tactical - from the Latin Tacticum meaning to paint something black and hang a bunch of useless crap off of it.

This is as "Tactical" as a shotgun needs to be:

Mossberg 500 with a 18.5" heavy wall barrel and screw in chokes.

Actually I've added a set of sling swivels and a but cuff shell holder to it.

If you got it for $100.00, then I would just keep it stock or maybe get one additional barrel, otherwise you might sink more money into it, than what a new one might cost you.

I bought a new 500A back in the 1990ís and the only thing I have done to it is, put a side saddle on it and a M16 Sling and a friend wanted to trade me his 590 stock for my 500 stock. The 590 stock is a little bit longer and since I have long arms, it helps me.
