So I took off my mainspring housing on my springfield mil-spec, I know I put it back together right but when I slid it back on the fame and into place nothing works. The hammer has no tension on it from the firing pin to the safety notch, then has tension the rest of the way back but doesn't stay locked back. Also as said in the title nothing else works.

Need a little help here GT, thanks!

you installed the sear spring under the sear or the sear feet are behind the disconnector.

should look like this when installed properly

I didn't take off the grip safety but I guess that doesn't matter?

even though you didn't take the grip safety off, the sear spring can dislodge and move when you take the MSH off.

another question, did you install the take down pin on the MSH?

Took me a while to figure out I wasn't doing that. I actually lost the pin but found a small nail that fit and clipped it to fit until I can find something better. I will take off the grip safety and check that out...just need to look at how to do that now. Thank you very much for your responses!

did you replace the MSH internals? if not, remove that pin you installed.
that is what is causing your problem, because the ILS MSH internals are not captured with a pin.

when you take an ILS equipped 1911 down, you need to use the "L" shaped tool to capture the internals and remove it after you re-install the MSH

Yeah, everything is back inside the MSH where it should be. I'm working on getting the grip safety off now, I think your first suggestion was what is wrong.

Call Brownells and order the AGI dvd for the 1911. It will be very helpful.

Just get the sear spring back to where Quack showed you.

Next time, if you want to remove only the MSH, put a rubber band around the grip safety. It'll keep the sear spring from flipping out.

Thanks everyone, I'm still having trouble getting the grip safety off but I think its because its never been off before and I'v had the gun for 8 years.

Remove the thumb safety first.

Yes, this is the tip I would have never known about if not for a few forums and brownells videos.

This would have avoided all your problems your having... and the pin (nail in your case) in the ILS MSH.

and watch for the plunger tube detents as they may or may not fly out. Get a proper MSH pin since its flared in the back so it won't come out like a straight pin/nail would.

Read this by going to "Care & Use" and then "Maintenance" http://www.sightm1911.com/

I use electrical tape. it's not on there long enough to leave a residue.

if he has ILS parts still in the MSH, then there should not be a MS Cap pin in the MSH.

Whatevers handy will work.

The OP needs to have someone show him how to go through a detail strip and reassemble, that way he understands the gun and won't mind taking it apart.

Someone on here could surely provide a good link for instructions.

Ah, forgot it was a Springer. I change the MSHs out to a regular steel type if they have an ILS or are made of plastic so I forget sometimes how those are set-up.

I know how to take one down pretty good. This was just my first venture into the rear of the gun. I'm learning as I go and thank you to everyone who has posted on here :wavey:
