View Full Version : Advice On Determining Type Of Shotgun

Locally on a trading website, I saw a shotgun for sale. I was advised by a friend to get a shotgun without rifling. How does one tell? Is the internal cavity smooth versus what I see in all of my pistols with a helical appearance? Pardon me for my lack of knowledge. I just don't want to get a shotgun that does not serve the intended purpose.

yes I believe that is correct, the barrel will be smooth not like a pistol or rifle. What type of sg do you want?

I saw a Rem 1100 Semiauto. It will be my first SG for HD.

if your getting a good deal on it go for it. Also think about a good 12 ga pump for all around use, especially sd. I have a remington magnum 870 pump and love it. You can usually find them for a reasonable price all day long. A semi auto is good for hunting, and target. But like I said if your getting it at a good price, get it.

An 1100 with a rifled barrel is unusual, though it is easy to eliminate from a photo if you don't see either rifle sights (could still be smooth bore) or a cantilever scope mount (only rifled). If you see a rib and beads, then it is a smooth bore. If you see a cantilever scope mount, then it is rifled. If you see rifle sights, then it could be smooth or rifled.

Or, you could just ask the seller.

That looks like a deer gun (rifled barrel).

It may be rifled. Easy way is to just stick a finger in the bore and feel for lands and grooves, or shine a flashlight and look. Or it may say on the side of the barrel, on the breech end.

Thanks, everyone. It is not rifled! Thank goodness. I got it today.

Now I have a nice complement of guns, SG and Rifle.

My 870 with rifled barrel says "fully rifled barrel" on it. Better to get the smooth bore for general use. Rifled barrels do not shoot any kind of shot very well. Pretty much stuck with sabot slugs only.
