Springfield has excellent customer service and they will stand behind their guns 100%.
They also have very good base 1911's in the $600.00 range such as their Mil-Spec.
The Range Officer looks like it would be a good target/ plinking gun because of the adjustable sights.
Lots of good guns in that price range but consider the customer service that if needed had better be good. There are plenty that are not.

An endorsement for the SA Range Officer. I've had mine for about six weeks and it's become a favorite over some worthy competition.

My vote is for the Desert Eagle 1911G.

That's a nice and would be at the top of my list.

Since you mentioned it's mainly for plinking, it might be blasphemy, but have you consider a 9mm? Look at SA Loaded 9mm. Or even a 9mm STI Spartan.

My recommendation would be for the Spartan and invest the extra money into ammo. People can argue about where guns are made and how, but hands down the Spartan is more out of the box ready then the RO

Both guns are pretty new, so long term reliability is a toss up. I'd say the nod would go to Springfield as their CS is legendary and DE is new to the 1911 game. If you can live with the adjustable sights of the RO, that would be my choice. John Harrison makes a fixed sight to replace it with if you prefer.

springfield gi and spend a few 100 more on upgrades, trigger, sights, tuned ex. also try to get rid of that godforsaken ils msh. plus if you ever want to build up with some custom work, it's the perfect canidate.

FWIW, there have been at LEAST 9,321,092,387,543 threads like this (what's the best 1911 under 1K?) posted in this forum. If you do a small search you'll probably get more answers and opinions than you care to read.

"plinking" and ".45" should never be used in the same sentence.

The Custom II and SW1911 are both great choices at $900 or under. :)

Since you are asking there is one choice in this this thread that is better than the Kimber quality wise, in my opinion- the SW1911. I'd also look at the STI Trojan. It's $1100 MSRP, you should be able to get it for ~$900.

the more i look at the sw the better it looks, even with the ex. ex. but if you can fit a silver dollar in the slide serrations, it's fugly. :tongueout:

At the end of the day, all we can do is make suggestions. It's your dime...so get what you want. If that is the Kimber, go for it. It's a solid choice.

Spartan, Range Officer, or gen 1 Kimber.

Kimber Custom Target II, SA RO, STI Spartan (and spend the extra on ammo), RIA Match (I have one and it is a GREAT gun and can be had for under $600, so another more ammo gun choice) and STI Trojan all come to mind.

Under $900 for me? STI or Colt, and used is acceptable if I'm able to check it out. I'm not much of a fan of the lower end or "mid-grade" Springfields or Paras, although there are a few exceptions. An older Dan Wesson would be fine, too. The prices they want for the current DW 1911s simply aren't in line with the offering to me.

I own 2 budget 1911's but I am not really a 1911 guy, I perfer revolvers. I have a rock island armory base model and a springfield milspec. I shoot nothing but 230 ball and have not had a single issue out of either one of them. If I had my way, I would prefer the shorter milspec trigger rather than the rockisland that sticks out to about half the trigger guard.

alright i know im comparing a 900$ gun to a 400$ gun but... just how much difference is quality is there between the kimber custom and a RIA after reading so much good stuff about the i am starting to wonder if the kimber is worth the extra 500$ any imput on the RIA?
Thanks for all the help,
Nathan

You can get a Kimber Custom2 for about $750.....which to me, is worth it over the cost of the RIA.

...but I'd spend $50 less and get the RO over both.

I bought a new Springfield Range Officer this past Sunday. So far I have only taken it apart and cleaned it. Maybe I will get out to the range soon.

My impression is that it is a first class gun with most of the bells and whistles that normally come on custom .45's. The fit and finish were great, with a very clean trigger break right at 4.5 lbs. Stickered prices at the gun show (Cobb County, GA) were from $700 - $850. Bottom line, its a LOT of gun for the $$.
