1 CAV NYC 33(one of the three's might be an 8). This is on a very old (1915) 1911. The pony is over the safety. 10xxxx serial. Clean with significant finish wear but no pitting (no sign of any buffing). Thoughts?

Military markings.
Probably a cavalry reserve unit from New York.
Just guessing but that is usually how military markings go.
keep her oiled and take good care of it. Do not think of refinishing it and if you have to shoot it do not use any "hot" rounds in her.
They were made for fairly low powered FMJ ammunition back then compared to what you find today.

Try the USGI sub-forum at 1911forum.com, they'll know more about it.

:agree:

I'm not overly familiar with USGI 1911A1s.

Thanks for the replies. It's not a 1911A1. It's a 1911.

As said, go to 1911forums and post pictures in there. Someone there will be able to help you.

Check your serial number here: http://www.proofhouse.com/

Go to Colt serial numbers and it will tell you specifically where they sent them.
