I alternate between a XD45 compact and a S&W M&P 40 fullsize.

But, both are too big for effective carry so I'm in the market for a snubbie. My wife has a S&W 642 in .357 mag that's nice, but I like the SP101.

I really like my P99 and it makes my short list for sure. Wish I could look at all of the sub 4.25" barrel choices, but I need to be able to carry back and forther across the border into Canada and pack the gun away unloaded prior to doing so.

I really love my G26 too, but when I am able to I carry a .45 fed with JHP ammo like the HST or Gold Dots or whatever. Big difference in the bang; I also own the G30 as well as a few other small .45's that are legal in Canada (though NOT to be carried note) as well as stateside. I don't want to have to worry about leaving my carry stateside and like the opportunity to 'go heavy' as soon as possible after crossing into the states. The feeling of comfort to a person who has been held at gunpoint is beyond words.

My g26 comes with me wherever I go. I wear it whenever it is just not convenient to carry a .45.

Gotta keep legal north of the 49th for when I come home; at least until we get our property down south and I can store my wee guns down there.

There are as many suggestions as there are answers; I would love to see a compilation of numbers.

I have been playing with a G30 and G26 with ported barrels (make a huge difference in a defensive situation with multiple shots taken rapidly). I am also playing with larger Glocks, Sig P226, Walther P99 in 9mm and 40 cal., Ruger P345 (a favourite); and a BUL Ultra X Compact (a super favourite if I could get the reliability up there - think it is just the extractor needing adjustment). My all time favourite is the HK P7PSP and P7M8 squeeze cockers as I can carry with one in the tube and feel totally comfy with IWB carry anywhere anyhow. They just FEEL safe and comfy and are dead to nuts accurate with the fixed barrel and piston recoil system. I love them to bits except for the price.

Too many to choose from and I think if I was living stateside (soon) I would be carrying a Kahr miniature or a featherweight snubby. Just makes it so much easier to carry all the time. And I always carry an extra twenty rounds.\

engineer88
05-05-2008, 23:07
Definitely the Kel-Tec P3AT.

1 more vote for the P3AT here, 4 rounds of DPX, 4 of GS (+1 Extension). I have not had an issue since the first break in session. But it was probably me that was broken in tbh. I love the little thing and would highly recommend it.

BTW, I did not have to fluff and buff. That is ancient history or reserved for when you are having problems only.

Usually have at least a Camillus Heat, Fenix P1, Keychain light and maybe an additional Blade and/or mags. G19 for those 'heavy' days.

Way back when I carried an "officially approved" revolver during my service in the FBI, half the office where I was assigned also carried 1911 variations as backups and off-duty weapons. Although these weapons were not approved at the time for official use, our feeling was that we'd worry about that later, as survival was our first concern. At that time, autos were just starting to come into acceptance, and of course, the infamous "miami shootout" turned the Bureau on its ear as to sidearm philosophy. I carried a revolver because I had to--I carried my Colt Combat Commander because I wanted to.

It all depends on what you get used to; I agree that the G22, G21, etc., can all be carried IWB with comfort... but one person's comfort is another's pain in the buttocks.

Personally, I am starting to lean towards a slightly larger semi auto; but keep it thin please. I love my HK p7's PSP and M8's. And I love my Walther P99s. I can hardly wait to get my hands on a Glock G30SF to try out. That should be awesome as I believe it is Glocks first offering with a thumb safety for concealed carry afficianados.

Too much choice. Spoiled for choice.

Jesse What holsters do you use for the p7, and how do you like them?

Torontogunguy
05-11-2008, 00:05
P7 and P7M8 holsters are radically different so be sure of what you are buying. If you check out Galco and most other major manufacturers they may have some holsters left for these models; that is where I bought mine for the most part; also, I had some custom holsters hammered up for me. Uncle Bill's did some nice holsters but there was some wait and lack of communication (ok... I will deal with them again). None that I use are particularly noteworthy excepting a shoulder rig that I picked up (think it is a Galco) that makes for a comfy carry when wearing the appropriate cover garment. That's the issue and in choosing a holster for the P7PSP and P7M8 (again different holsters due to the location of the mag release) and I have a box full of them.

I am working on which one I like best as with all of my holster/gun combinations. It also depends on their ultimate purpose and method of carry, of course.

Holsters. The most painful decision. The holster that I love is not usually the holster that you will like. Good luck.

PS BE SURE that you pick a holster designed for the right gun otherwise you are going to have a bugger of a time with your magazines popping out unexpectedly..... I tried one of my stock holsters on a P7M8 and wound up popping a magazine out almost into my wife's soup in the restaurant. The release is on the trigger guard.

Loved the pix of your G26 and G19. I was always under the distinct impression that the G19 was simply a G26 with a longer grip? So I have no G19, but have a G26 that I love to bits... I put a Storm Lake ported barrel on the thing thru the local distributor; it just dropped right in. Wow. Wow. This thing is a tack driver now. Did I say I love it to bits? We are big Glock fans. For regular concealed carry stateside I carry G26 ported barrel; and G30 witha Storm Lake barrel on it as well. I wish I were more comfy carrying Glocks concealed with one in the tube. Nice pictures. Thanks for taking the time.

I love my P99 in 40 cal, but only carry it OWB as I have a thing about carrying one in the tube ready to go for speed... and the chance of something getting caught in the trigger guard and bang. The other thing is the mag release is on the trigger guard; makes carrying OWB a little less prone to having the mag release tripped by your shirttails and finding out when you go to draw the gun. But it is indeed one of my personal favourites nontheless with the proper holster.

And I am going to also take a look now at the SERPA holster for my G30. Thanks for the input guys!

Keep em coming guys! Lots of interesting thoughts here. You all know how much I hate carrying my Glocks IWB with one in the tube (don't care what BATFE says they are COCKED and READY to fire. I have no idea how they came up with DOUBLE ACTION on the Glocks as if you have one in the tube it is COCKED as far as I am concerned, even if not fully cocked. Cannot tell you how many AD's I have heard of with Glocks and as a result I am afraid of carrying for fear of AD). I am carrying my Glock 26 and 30 OWB (not IWB) with one in the tube.

I have several handguns suitable for carrying; am starting to lean towards my Walther P99 and HK P7M8's. The Glock 26 sure is nice for pocket carry though.

As I was lectured about Thursday night at the gun club... one must always think waaaaay ahead when carrying once the decision is made.

Especially so if you live in Canada as we do and must be able to possess and transport your carry across borders. Mine needs to have a 4.25" barrel minimum, must have a max of 10 round magazine and cannot be a prohibited calibre. So my options are limited.

I think if I could transport easily without the restrictions I might lean towards one But, then again, I hate reloading revolvers.

I think we are going to be moving back stateside in 3 years when the kids head off to University. I would love to be able to move stateside today. Right now. Probably to New England somewhere (NH?) and keep a place in the south (New Mexico?) for the winters. We have family all over the place except NM.

Please keep the info and picture coming!

As I suggested in an earlier post....

Do yourself a favor.. Just buy one of the "A" grade HK P7's being sold now ( Lowery Saxony Police imports), a couple of extra magazines and you are good to go..

The HK P7 is extremely safe from ad/nd's. (squeezecocker). The HK P7 has a decades old reputation for being as close to 100% reliable as any pistol could be. The HK P7 is, I'm sure you already know this, unbelievably accurate, and the HK P7 is extremely well made.

I bought three HK P7's recently from CDNN. Two of the "A" grades came "as new", the other NIB.

I have a Walther P99. It is an excellent "house gun".. I've had a Glock 26, it was an excellent "brick" in the hands. (The Walther P99c/As IS much better).

Just personal opinion, no offense to contrary opinions.

Best Wishes,

Jesse

I tend to agree with you on the HK's. I own a P7PSP and two P7M8's. Dead accurate. Dead safe. Recoil is inline due to fixed barrel and gas piston inline, etc. I do like them. Their only detraction is the weight.

I was "advised" by the gun club expert on Thursday night that my HK's will fail at around 2K rounds and need to have a plastic part replaced. He didn't know which plastic part but I have friends who have run 10K rounds and have not had a single misfeed or misfire. Ever.

I feel like a fart in a wind storm here. Never sure what to choose. That 4.25" barrel is also nice as it lets the bullet get up to speed and I am using +P Gold Dots but have not tried them in the HK's yet. Want to run a couple hundred rounds and see what happens with the +P's.

Thanks for the information.

My wife and I use Speer "Gold Dot's" in our Seecamps, but I've found that the 147gn. Gold Dots impact low for me at self defense range in all my 9mm pistols.

My preferred personal self defense round in my 9mm pistols is 115gn. DoubleTap jhp's.. Very FAST, low flash, still using the Gold Dot bullet. Not as expensive as the fancier stuff (50rds roughly $28), but it's my favorite round. You might check them out online if you have an interest.

Best Wishes,

Jesse

P.S. I think the gentleman who thinks an HK P7 is bound to self destruct at 2000 rounds is full of it. I researched the P7 carefully before buying my three and that simply does NOT seem to be the case. Every product made by man can and will fail sooner or later, but I think the HK P7 is of high quality and very durable.

Cool post. Thanks.

In the winter I go back and forth between a Glock 19 and a Glock 26. In the summer when it gets really hot I have a little J frame .38 S&W Bodyguard that I keep on hand.

This summer though, it is all about the Ruger LCP for me. I just got one, shot the hell out of it and I think it is ready to go to work now. This summer is going to be nice since the thing is about as small as my cell phone it will just be a matter of putting it in my pocket and going.

Opps, sorry Carbofan21, it is a Kahr PM 9 with black finish and Tritium night sights. It looks a little different, because I have a Pearce Grip extension installed on it. This is a great little ad-on for these pistols, as it gives your pinky finger something to grab onto, instead of being left dangling out in space.

Kahr even sells them on their own website.

For protecting my home, I rely on my Glock 17, which I have customized quite a bit. So any intruder coming into my house risks seeing this:

Nice! Hate to look down that barrel! :wow:

The view looking at the front of my Taser is not too friendly either. It also has a laser sight built into it, as well as an LED flashlight too. You just take the safety off, and both turn on automatically.

Here is what it looks like:

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s272/lanceJOregon/guns/taser_online.jpg

However, my Taser is generally for CCW. Anyone crazy enough to invade my home will get introduced to my Glock 17.

Here is a photo of the DPM Systems Recoil Reduction Assembly that is inside my Glock:

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s272/lanceJOregon/guns/glockspring_on.jpg

Between it, and the double ported stainless match barrel, recoil even with the heavy +P+ Winchester Ranger T ammo is very minimal and easy to control.

Here is another photo that compares the size of my Glock 17 to my S&W M&P .40 caliber compact, and also to my Kahr PM 9.

For concealed carry, the Kahr PM 9 is about as small as you can go, without changing to something in the .380 Auto caliber.

That's a cool combination you've got there. I'd do everything you've done except for the 3.5lb connector. Dunno about that for CC. Would certainly do it for range shooting. Buy hey, if it works for you, why not?

Afmo;

How's that XD handle at the range? I've been holding out till the XD-M comes out then I've been thinking about getting one in 9 and one in .45.

I've already got tons of high cap mags for both, at the last gunshow one dealer had a couple 55 gallon drums filled with XD high caps for 7 bucks each brand new so I purchased like 30 of 9mm and 30 of 45.

And also, how are the mags of yours holding up?

Thanks

I have both the Glock 26, 30 and XD9. I also have the HK P7M8 and P7PSP. Tough question to answer. OWB carry... Glocks are nice; no safety to fumble. IWB Glocks are nice but have a problem... no safety to fumble with. Too easy to AD/ND IMHO. So IWB I would prefer something a bit safer if I am going to carry with one in the chamber (and Glocks, as far as I am concerned, are cocked and ready to go as soon as the trigger is pulled). IWB I carry either my XD9, Walther P99 or my fav the HK P7's which are squeeze cockers. All of these have grip safeties, decockers or squeeze cockers; one simple line of defense against AD/ND, for which Glocks are No. 1 and don't let anyone tell you any different. The P99 is small and light enough for pocket carry; I will probably use one for IPSC ... or the XD40 Pro. My fav, the P7's are heavy, all steel. But they are the safest of the bunch no matter how you carry it (even clip carry IWB) and when wearing a winter or heavier fall coat I carry in my pocket. The are safe as heck, deadly accurate and super reliable if you keep them clean (especially noting that they don't like lint).

So... the question is not easy to answer. I love the reliability of Glocks and use them extensively but never IWB carry or pocket carry. Just too much risk of hitting that trigger and making bang. Duty carry or OWB carry or IPSC carry? No problem. I love them to bits. And they are a snap to clean and break down to the last bitty part (think there are under forty in total). NEVER IWB or pocket carry a Glock IMHO. Ever. The others are okay for any carry method you wish pretty much... I like the decocker on the P99. First shot is something like 8 or 10 pounds and then it reverts to a very light pull as it should. Our regional police also use Sigs with 12.5 pound first pulls. They practice doing chin ups with their trigger fingers I am sure.

I am not familiar with ALL models and makes but have played with many. One gun does not fit for every circumstance. I would NEVER carry a Glock for instance with one in the tube in one of those elastic band carries aimed at my jewels. Sic. You can carry fine for twenty years.... best you have all your kids early as at some point it is going to go bang when you don't expect it. Glock is a great duty weapon but I would carry something else that's just as reliable and is somewhat more accurate... I've been using a Para for IPSC/IDPA recently and have just finished putting a thousand rounds through it without cleaning it or lubing it. Not a single failure, dead accurate and repeatable, great trigger (adjustable) and so on. Best 1911 platform I have used and I am not a fan of 1911's due to reliability.

Good luck.

Torontogunguy:

Thanks for your reply. Clearly, you have plenty of experience carrying, moreso than I do (7 years as an LEO, then left to go to graduate school). Not at all familiar with what appears to be your favorite carry choice, the HK P7, but I will look it up. As for 1911 platforms, I'm impressed by what you say about the Para Ordnance (just now went to the site and read up on it). Probably the gun I should have bought for range use but didn't know about it. However, I've been doing some competitive stuff down here with a Taurus PT1911 that has so far been dead reliable and an accurate shooter with a sweet trigger.

No, I'd never carry any Glock IWB, OWB is fine and I do it frequently. For me, IWB is mostly a Chief's Special or a Kel Tec .380 (my ATM gun).

Just read about the P7. My, my. Squeezer safety on the front strap. Obviously OK for IWB but watch the lint. I'm impressed by the appearance, size, and design, although the two sites I just visited never mentioned mag capacity, which makes me wonder whether it's single stack or double stack and how fat it is.

I carry a G32 in a Raven concealment holster for IWB when wearing jeans or pants. It really hides the gun very well and stays put. Easy to get the firearm into action too.

I carry a G22 for work in a Blackhawk Serpa holster. It used to be a Springfield Mil Spec but a change in policy doesn't allow firearms with manual safeties, so I switched to the Glock.

As soon as I get the holster in, I will carry a Sig P232 in a Raven Concealment holster when in shorts or I want something lighter.

I don't quite understand the problem with carrying a "safe action pistol" IWB assuming you are using a proper holster that covers the trigger guard. Say, something like a comptac c-tac, m-tac or a raven concealment holster or even a good quality leather IWB holster. I see no more danger of having an nd with that setup than carrying OWB. Its not as if you are going to be yanking the pistol out 12 times a day, put the holster/weapon on in the beginning of the day and take it off at the end of the day.

Torontogunguy
08-31-2008, 18:34
The "safe action pistol" is indeed safe as long as nothing gets caught on that trigger and that will be okay 99.99999% of the time. I just don't want to be the winner of the lottery by having a piece of my undershirt or something get caught while reholstering... or worse yet, forgetting to remove my finger from the trigger guard while reholstering. Yes, the Glock is safe... unless you win the lottery and get something caught on that trigger. There is no secondary 'safety' to back up the 'safe action'.... which is why I prefer to carry something with at least two seperate and distinct safety devices to prevent an accidental bang. Especially when the gun is stuck in my pants if you know what I mean.

BTW, I am by no means an expert in terms of concealed or any other type of carry method... just a scientist with a very logical mind. AND a perfectionist.

So where does that leave me? Confused is the word that comes to mind. There are so many considerations in making the choice to carry concealed and then the choice of WHAT to carry and how. Confused... so when I put in my two cents worth please please take it with a grain of salt as you should all advice freely given on any of the forums.

The Para has at least three active safeties between you and bang... a thumb safety (ambidextrous on mine), a grip safety and of course... the trigger. The trigger?

I am looking at the XD40-M Pro right now. It also has three active safeties as well as what Glock would term its "passive safety system". I like it. But is it for everyone? No, of course not. I think in the end we all make our own choices based on what we are comfy with. Sometimes uninformed choices to be sure, as you will note from all of the different advice you will get on the forums, but nontheless it is all good advice if you sort the wheat from the chaff and do a little research yourself.

The P7M8 for instance (which is no longer made by the way) is certainly not for everyone. I just found it very comfy and cosy for carry IWB or in the pocket, etc. You have to give the grip a really good squeeze to get it cocked and then the 'hold' weight for that grip is minimal so you are not pulling your shots. It is thin being single stack but at the same time it is heavy being all steel. It has everything inline and a fixed barrel... more accuracy again. I like it but it looks like there are plenty of new entries into the marketplace for both concealed carry IWB and OWB that will supercede it. Same as digital cameras. No sooner do you buy it and get used to it then something better comes along.

Glocks are one of the finest pistols on the market to be sure and we own several of them and love each and every one of them to bits. Just ran a thousand rounds through a Glock 34 without a single failure of any kind. Ditto our Glock 35. Gotta love it. My 1911 style pistols in that situation would have at least one or two FTF or FTE or something and that is one too many for me, so asides from perhaps the Para's we own I lean towards striker fired pistols.... and then start to get confused again.

In the end you will probably settle on one or two that you prefer... but in all my trips to the range with a new handgun or rifle there are always a few guys that take a great interest... because there is always something better coming along that looks interesting.

Please do not take my two cents worth as anything more than that. There are very very few experts out there, even the ones that claim to be experts are generally not. DO take in all the information that you can, as I do, and then go out and make up your own mind. You have several years of concealed and duty carry under your belt (pardon the pun) so you know that 'two cents worth' is worth exactly that. Including mine most of all as there are many that have more experience than I do. I'm just a nut when it comes to comparing makes and models for various purposes and I consider IWB, OWB, duty carry, concealed carry, pocket carry, inside my hat carry, etc., all different with different parameters for excellence and safety. And there is a tradeoff, needless to say, amongst all of them.

In the end, IPSC's logo has it right on in my opinion... translated from latin... "SAFETY, ACCURACY, SPEED"... and in real life I believe that this holds true in pretty much any situation. Speed does little for you without safety and accuracy.

All the best. I am off to look for the latest and best again.

RJM: Regarding your comment about wondering why IWB with a Glock was problematic. I had forgotten that occasionally I do carry a G26 in a Bianchi leather IWB. Trigger is well covered and I have no concerns there. The holster is excellent. I think the danger Torontogunguy is talking about is during re-holstering wherein some part of one's clothing might get tangled in the trigger. But then guns were meant to be dangerous. You just have to pay attention. Which I do when re-holstering.
