I am new to 1911's. I own a TRP and a DW Heritage. I am thinking of adding another gun to my collection. What do you guys think of the Wilson X-TAC? I really like the way it looks, but know nothing about them and never have seen one discussed. I am using the TRP for home defense and the DW for the range. All subsequent purshases will be becaue I want to buy something, not any other reason. X-Tac,Springer Custom is another option. Thoughts?

There are a bunch of other WCs I like better, but that's subjective. If you dig it, go for it. I like Springfield Custom, but not the wait.

Welcome aboard btw. You need to post pics of your TRP and Heritage because we are junkies here and love pics.

Everything Wilson builds is spot on and arguably the best semi custom shop around. The XTAC is an awesome gun and even though it is a new model, it still utilizes the traditional, proven Wilson design. If you like the X treatment like I, then you will LOVE this gun. The only things people will not like about it here is the "X pattern". You cant argue with WC's quality, accuracy, and reliability.
SA's custom shop is awesome as well and IMO probably as good or 2nd to Wilson. You cant go wrong with either shop. I personally like Wilson's designs a bit better, but the TGO-1 is beautiful and I will also own a Professional at some point. But I know I will have multiple WC's in my safe. In part because I get a pretty nice discount because we are Wilson master dealer's LOL

Why do you like others better? Is it just asthetics or something else?
Not sure what you have against TRP's, mine is more accurate than I am and 100% flawless.
It just seems that I can find most other guns thoroughly discussed, but no X-Tacs.

Yeah, pretty much asthetics. Wilson builds a hell of a nice gun. I just don't care for the X motif. I can think of half a dozen (if not more) WCs that I would give my left nut to own.

I have nothing against the TRP to be honest. I have put some rounds through another member's and handled a few others. Just don't like the feel of the 20LPI on the TRP. Everyone seems to love them and they are built like tanks, it's just not for me.

The X-TAC is relatively new as was mentioned when compared to the CQB which far and away is the most popular. I will have a Wilson in my safe within the next couple of months. Their customer service is very well respected, their reputation is largely stellar, and I think you would have a hard time making a case against them not being one of the premier semi-custom shops around. Save for the failed ADP, you could rank any Wilson pistol in or near the top of its category.

I promise pics. They are just stock guns (for now) but I understand wanting pics. I like drooling at other peeps stuff too. It's how I am learning. Snow/ice on the ground here in North Cackalacky now. Maybe inside shots, I mean pics. Thanks again guys. Keep discussing and I keep learning.

teh X-tac is Wilson's lowest priced gun (before options)

don't really care for the "X" motif, but that's personal preference.

For a gun in that price range (actually less than the X-tac), i would pick up an Ed Brown Special Forces with a naked slide.

My preference is Springfield Custom SHop guns, though if you order one it's about a year wait.
I bought the TGO-1 for less than the X-tac's base MSRP and the Professional Operator for what a new TRP Operator costs.

Can't go wrong with any of the Wilson guns IMO. Pick the one that fits your budget and taste the best. I like the Xtac as well. Baer has a newer 1911 that is pretty sweet as well if you like basic no frill 1911s.

The Ed Brown was one of my other thoghts. I seem to like guns without the front cocking serrations. I also thought about a DW Valor. I'm trying to justify
the upgrade to a semi-custom at my level of "newness." I have an understanding wife and an ok budget, so will probably take the plunge to see the difference for myself. Thanks again for the feedback and suggestions.:wavey:
The only other thing I might mention or ask, I'm 6"5" with big hands (really just long skinny fingers), do any guns fit this condition better? Not alot of shops around here to try stuff.:dunno:

I was at a show last weekend and one guy had a great selection of DWs. I got to play with a Valor, CCO, VBOB, and Guardian. For $1,400, you will be hardpressed to find a better production gun than the Valor or VBOB.

All of my monies are going towards a trip to Disneyworld this Sept with the family. What that trip is going to cost I could buy 3-4 1911s from George :faint:

Never seen one. Looks good!! Need to check prices. The X-TAC is about the most I'm comfortable spending on a gun at this time. I'm too new to appreciate and evaluate exactly what I want in a gun so I'm trying to be somewhat conservative. I've gotten into sports car racing and guns later in life and both are expensive hobbies. (Mid-life crisis....)

Hokie1911

The Guncrafter is right there with Wilson in terms of quality. Alex builds guns that are all business. He actually worked at Wilson for 8 years as Director or Research and Development. Price is in the $2,500 ballpark depending on options. To many here, GI is one of the (if not THE) best value in the semi-custom realm.

There is a post on these here boards about a gentleman who's " not digging his Springer Pro." His opinion has to do with the undercut of the grip/trigger. That thread got me to thinking, do different guns have thicker frames and thus would not need as thick of a grip to be a handfull? Is there much difference in the distance from the back of the frame to the trigger of these semi-custom guns? Bac, can you tell much diff. among your collection? Anyone else have an opinion?

The frames should be the same thickness. That's part of what makes it a 1911.

As far as the undercut is concerned, the tighter the radius, generally the easier it is to get a firm, high handed grip on the pistol.

As for the distance between the trigger and the main spring housing, it all depends on trigger length and whether you have a flat or ached MSH.

we were there the week before and during Thanksgiving,it was mainly a trip for my 4yr.old she loved the lunch at the castle, and don't forget about the breakfast with Mary Poppins, Alice and others, she got alot of one on one time there, its at the Grand Floridian.not to mention the food was great.:embarassed:

Sounds like a great time :)

I have a 8yo son, 13yo daughter and 16yo son so they are a little old for some of the character stuff :( We might do a character breakfast at Epcot, a the Norway part of World Showcase. They have all the Disney princesses, I am sure I would look good having my picture taken with all of those 22 year old princesses :)

The Grand Floridian is a sweet looking resort. It is on the list to stay at someday, we choose the Yacht Club this trip because it is so close to Epcot. I really love the Epcot :)

You know I need a few friends to go and do the "Drink Yourself Around The World" challenge at Epcot.

We start in Canada and work our way around to Mexico country by country drinking the national drinks or national beers of each country we pass thru. I need some help cause somebody is going to have to carry me starting in Morocco :) I hear it a pretty tough challenge with all the drinking and walking involved!

Wilson makes a lot of different pistols these days. Maybe it keeps the smiths less crazy to make subtle. Changes from gun to gun.
