I'm in the market for a 1911 in .40S&W. Narrowed my choices down to an EMP and a STI Ranger. I know both are great guns and this would be a CC gun, so both are very good CC guns. I've shot the EMP 40, and own a STI Legacy, but habe never shot the Ranger. Anyone own/shot both?

I owned a Ranger II in .45 so I dunno about one in .40 and now own the EMP in .40 and it shoots smoother than Ranger ever did. To ME, it would be hard to go wrong with either.

Leaning towards the EMP .40 myself. Anything you didn't like about the Ranger?

Never any ill word about the Ranger. The EMP seems like a great gun as well. I would say it's a coin toss as to whihc is better. I would go STI cause of that sweet Tejas silhouette on the slide :)

Wow, that's a tough choice. The Ranger is a smidge cheaper and pretty much good to go as is. The EMP would need a few things tweaked (to me) for carry....which adds a few extra bucks. Plus the FS is already done on the Ranger and I haven't looked the weight difference up, but I'm guessing the extra few oz would help with recoil.

I don't think I've ever mentioned anything on this form but I bought a Ranger AND a Trojan at the same time. Had problems with both, and I put a tool steel slide stop in the Ranger and it literally started cutting into the slide, like rounding off the corner edge in the cutout. It was that soft, my smith had never seen anything like it and he's been building 1911s for years. The trojan's problem was easily fixed, just a ramp angle change and a chambering from STI, and they got it back to me quickly. However, I went through an ordeal with the Ranger because I was trying to use "aftermarket" parts. The Ranger DID work for the relatively short time that I had it. I still think STI puts out a good product but I just prefer the EMP.

Wonder why it doesn't have a picture? I'd also want one with the Horned Lizard grips. I know I could change them out, but why have to spend another $65 on top of the price of the gun?

They usually take a few days to get one up. That's a good price shipped and FWIW, I have VZs on my EMPs and they are great.

Yeah, but I want it to look just like Quack's...minus that God aweful flat trigger.

That's a pretty quick, easy, relatively cheap fix.

If I ever get one, will be set up pretty similar. 10-8 rear, no ambi, Harrison trigger and grips, flat baseplates.

I would go with the Ranger II. I love my EMP, but personally would like to shoot .40 out of a little bigger gun
