70 series with a titanium firing pin also! Those FCS aren't really my style, but I like it otherwise. Good job S&W. I'm guessing street price will be right around $1000-1100.

Nice. The cocking serrations don't do it for me either. I like a full bobtail, not the semi-round butt thing that them and Kimber are doing. But, it's better than nothing.

Only thing that bugs me about the S&W 1911s is that darn external extractor... why'd they go and do that?

I can dig it.

I found their 2011 catalog. The "E" series also comes with a chamfered and recessed barrel, rear slide serrations and an enhanced trigger (hopefully no more wobble). Sounds good to me and better than their previous offerings.

From all accounts, it works very well. Unlike Kimbers old version.

Not bad. Would be better w/o FCS and a true bobtail instead of the rounded butt. I guess the designers at S&W read gun magazines in the bathroom and have seen the Kimber ads on the back covers so much, that the idea seeped into their heads. :dunno:

If S&W would of kept the lawyer crap off of there and maybe scaled down the billboard a little it would of been a real winner. I would still buy one. Like I said it reminds me of the DW and for less money.

Definitely looks like the Kimber more than the DW or the EB. I gotta say though, for a grand, I'll probably pick one up. I'm addicted to commander bobtails. I wish it didn't have the FCS, but it is what it is.

I love it! I could do without those slide serrations and warnings as well. However, for the money and having a company like S&W's name on it makes it a winner to me!

Kimber's "Round Heel" frame:
http://www.kimberamerica.com/1911/super-carry/super-carry-custom
Nighthawk's rendition of a flat bobtail:
http://www.condron.com/pics/nighthawk/talon2/Talon_bobtail_6611.jpg

I believe that's a correct comparison. Personally I prefer the execution of the Kimber. I like my 1911's like I like my women, with a round butt.

One can always round the bobtail more dramatically:

Ed Brown originally developed the "bobtail" and owns the patent on it. The original bobtail design has a rounded point and straightened angled flat to the bottom rear as you can see in the pic below.

Kimber, and now SW have gotten around the patent by making their "bobtails" more of a radius with no flat, as you can see in the pics at the beginning of the thread.
This way, there are no royalties due Ed Brown for use of their design. I guess Kimber never opened a patent on their rounded butt as SW is now out with almost exactly the same thing.
Anyway, that's the difference.

Is that a DW with your grips?
What are the definitions of the "CBOB" and "VBOB"s I hear about on here?

01-22-2011, 08:56
No Swartz safety-those three words combined interest me in a S&W 1911, since I actually like S&W's EEs. The FCS/scales are not my favorite, but they are at least less annoying in the dark finish. Hey, they'd match my M&Ps for pictures, though. Fire the guy that designed the grip panels, he is obviously a plant working for aftermarket grip marketer.

Yes, that is a "redone" 2007 DW CBOB. The CBOB is still being produced, but only about 300 units per year that are supposedly only for sale in CA, although you can find them on line.
The VBOB was a new model in 2010 and is very similar in appearance to the CBOB, but is a higher echelon. More hand fitting of parts, different sights etc. Both the CBOB and the VBOB (and the Guardian for that matter) utilize tool steel internals now which is a step up from parts used in 2009. The VBOB also features the Heinie straight 8 sights. You have the choice in the VBOB of bead blasted stainless, or the new Duty Treat metal treatment finish. The CBOB is still in the naked stainless with polished slide and frame flats.

I like it. S&W makes nice 1911s and the external extractor works well. Good stuff when new 1911s come out from a company like S&W.

Let's go Ruger, you need to get into the 1911 game. :)

Appreciate the tutorial Sir. Again your craftsmanship on those grips is very evident
