look around for Wolf, it's steel case and not the best, but ok for range use and likely one of the cheapest around.

Most people don't agree with me, but I use Wolf almost exclusively. I have close to 800 rounds if thru my Smith and I have yet to have a single malfunction. Of course I wouldn't use it for duty, but for range/plinking it works fine.

Locally, Federal has come down to about $140/500 rounds. I can buy Wolf for $100/500 rounds. If brass ammo would drop within $20 or so, id gi back to it. For now though, Wolf has served me just fine.

Silverbear & Brownbear over wolf. A LOT more consistent in the power department. The Silverbear is coated with zinc & runs smooth like brass. Both are Cleaner then wolf too.

Assuming you are ok with using 55gr., go to Cabela's or Gander Mtn. when Federal is on sale for $6/20 rd box. (don't buy if its at regular price), and maybe at a gun show if you're lucky.
DSG had Fiocchi for $289/1000rds w/free shipping for awhile, don't know if its good ammo but I waited too long and now the price is $350.

I checked at www.georgia-arms.com (http://www.georgia-arms.com) the other day and they are offering free shipping right now.

Ok I just went back and looked and the free shipping is on orders over $500 for east coast, $700 for central and $1000 for west coast. Maybe if you had someone to go in on a few thousand rounds may be a good deal.

What's the deal with them? They are charging more for reloads than you can buy factory for.

I got some Tula 62 grain hollow points. $200 delivered for a 1k round case. I ran about 100 rounds of it last weekend and no issues whatsoever. I did talk to another guy that said his AR would NOT cycle steel cased. I have a Bushmaster XM15-E2S M4 btw.

Only reason I got the HP is cause it was cheaper than the 55gr FMJ. :dunno:

SGammo.com. small guy out of Oklahoma. good dude. I ordered ammo from him on a sunday, got to me in NC that thursday, ordered some more ammo the next sunday, and it came the following thursday. well packaged in peanuts. shipping on 1k rounds of .223 and 3500 rounds of .22lr was like $25. 55lb package if I recall correctly.

I ordered 1500 rounds of the 62gr HP from them as well. I ordered on Monday afternoon and had it in hand that Wednesday before 3pm.

I wanted 1500 but they were only selling it in cases of 1000. Two minutes after a phone call to a very nice woman her husband had went in and updated their site. He added the 500 round option to various items that previously did not have that option. I will order from them again, maybe exclusively.

I haven't used Silver Bear in .223 yet but works great in 9mm. I have used Tula in .223 and haven't had problems. For < $4 per box the savings add up fast.

That's the kind of place I like to support. AIM surplus won't sell to me because I'm under 21, even though it's rifle ammo and it's totally legal.

No concerns about running the steel cased stuff through an AR?

some people say it wears extractors, but after 2k rounds you can pay for a whole new upper.

Look on some of the AR forums such as M4carbine.net. Guys over there are putting thousands upon thousands of steel through their ARs a year.

I don't no about wearing an extractor out, but I have ripped the rims off more than a couple steel cases on extraction, I just make sure I have a cleaning rod with me when I shoot the wolf stuff which is alot!

Start reloading.
It's awesome, and it will definitely save you tons of cash when loading for the .223 while still allowing you to shoot high quality rounds.

I believe not all steel cased ammo are alike. I've tried Wolf and Silver Bear. Of the two I prefer Silver Bear. It's cleaner and I have yet to experience any failure to feed or extract. Aren't extractors cheap anyway?
