View Full Version : Best 1911 for the money?

I want to get a 1911 really bad but I can't justify spending $3,000 on a gun right now. I really like those Ed Brown's. Anyways, what is a more afford option that looks and performs well? My spending limit is $1,500 tops.

Les Baer Premier II
Best 1911 platform out there for the money.
I bought mine used for $1250.
The previous owner only ran lead 2oogr SWC thru it
which is also my preference.
Put a Dawson Presion fiber optic front sight on.
This gun will make you a better shooter.
I had my doubts but after owning one I'm a loyal fan of LB.

Definitely Les Baer. Or look very closely at the DW Valor.

If you want a Brown, scour Gunbroker and elite deal seeker for a gently used one for $1600-$1750.

As mentioned, take a look at one of Baer's entry models. I picked up my Premier II NIB for $1500, and it's at least one step above anything else you'll find in that price range, great value.

Best gun for the money IMO, is the Guncrafter No Name, but in the price range that you're looking in, I gotta throw another vote Les Baer's way.

A used Baer or TRP or STI Lawman

I can't believe I forgot about the TRP. Great gun for the money.

Having owned both a Baer and Dan Wesson, for the money the DW is the better deal IMO

As mentioned Dan Wesson.

They used to be one of the best deals.

If anything, I think they're now closer to being overpriced than they are to being the best for the money. They're pricing themselves too close to some better competition, in my opinion.

Les Baer Premier 2!

As mentioned Dan Wesson.

Back when they were $1K ish that was true. Now they are riding marketing and hype.

Baer for over $1000.

Springfield Armory for under $1000. Mostly because of the coupon they have. Plenty of cheap mags can be had.

I like the TRP and, unlike Dan Wesson, you can still get them for a good price.

A gently pre-loved Baer always has my vote! TRS most likely. And if you perfer a rear target sight then the Premier II.

Looks like Les Baer is a winner. Those damn Ed Brown carries are so good looking though. Which Les Baer model should I be looking at?

Hard to beat a TRS for around $1,800ish.

...or the Ultimate Tactical Carry. Basically a TRS without the logo, and a much more tacticool name.

Never shot a Baer. Have a Dan Wesson and a Springfield TRP. I vote TRP. I love mine and its right in your price range. The TRP has been flawless. Welcome!

That TRS isn't bad. That might be the one. The TRP isn't bad either but I like the Les Baer better. What's up with Kimber? Are they junk? I love the Ed Brown carries though. I don't think I'll be happy until I buy one but like I said before, I can't justify spending that much on a gun at this stage in my life.

I gotta vote for a Smith and Wesson. Just shot mine for the first time a couple of days ago and wow! The target right above the pistol was my best at 7 yards. This 45 makes me a good shooter. It's either the grip angle, barrel length, weight, fit, or maybe just 1911 magic. I bought mine used. Bow

I would imagine that the OP is me a year ago or so.

Ive had a

S&W 1911 w/LG
Les Baer TRS
STI Trojan
Kimber Carry II (i think thats the name)
SA Loaded Target
SA TRP Operator
Wilson CQB

and a host of non-1911's like the

Glock in almost every model
XD 9 and 45
Kahr CW 45
Baby Eagle 45
CZ 45
Barretta 92 FS

And that is just last year.

A few were keepers but the STI and the TRP get shot the most

Any gun will do.... (cheesy line from one of the training places),
but 1911's usually make it a bit easier.

I wasted 5k rounds "training" myself. Take a class or learn from someone.

If someone would have told me before I bought the first one to get a STI Trojan or a SA TRP Operator (if you want rails), and take classes, then I would have saved a boat load of money.

The Trojan is a great range/carry/games gun in MY opinion. Also don't get a gun and baby the crap out of it. They all get scratched if they get used. I spent a lot of money on the TRS, and I didn't care one bit if it was scratched a little. Look for it actually, if you can find a deal because of it. I promise that wear and scratches do not make the gun any less accurate.

All my friends and my family had trouble anticipating recoil. Buy snap caps and have a buddy load them. If you flinch you lose. Try not to lose. Also pull the trigger so slow that you miss your bus ride home. Those two things helped me a lot, after I went to some classes.

You get better and faster with time. Anyone can miss really fast.

Get a good VM II or clone. Used holster carry as well as new ones in my opinion. By a good gun belt.

Hope I helped, or at least didn't hurt.

I like the RIA, but that's absurd.

My $1000 STI Trojan will shoot rings around my RIA Government.

I asked a guy from down South online who makes his living testing and testifing in courts about guns in crime cases. He 100% believes the new SW1911's made only within the last two years are the best 1911 for the money. He said expensive customs are over rated.

I just got a SW1911 TFP made in the new S&W Houlton, Maine facility for $750 from Buds Police Supply and I agree with him:supergrin:

check out bac's posts and thread count.

I can only guess he has fired 10 rounds for every post or more.

I fealt like the Trojan out shot the Les Baer, but that might just be me.

I would buy a Trojan and wait until you have a problem with it or out shoot it or win the lottery.

Then buy something more expensive.

LB are custom fit, but I can't start to appreciate that accuracy at the ranges I shoot, and can hit simething.
