The hard drive for my iMac decided to die this morning so that unfortunately leaves me needing a new one. Which make/model should I be looking at here? I've never had to do this before so it's a little foreign to me.

I'm also considering upgrading my RAM while I'm at it so suggestions for that are welcome as well.

Well, first you need to know what type of RAM you have, and what connection type your Hard Drive is... Unless your MAC is really old, it's probably SATA. Ram... could be anything... if you know your iMac model, post it and we can track it down...

As for brands.... For Memory, I like Crucial, Kingston.
Hard drives -- Seagate and Western Digital.

I have the 24" aluminum iMac from when they were first introduced in 07'. Unfortunately, that's all the information I have since it won't boot up.

Do you have any documentation that came with it? It has to have a model # or something I would think? Maybe a Mac-head will chime in. Once you have the Model #, I imagine finding out specifics on the machine will be pretty easy.

You might even be able to call Apple, explain the problem to them, and ask them what kind of memory and hard drive is in the machine...

Model # A1225 http://support.apple.com/kb/SP16

It appears to be DDR2 SDRAM and Serial ATA HDD.

How does this look for the RAM? Kingston Apple 4GB Kit (2x2GB Modules) 667MHz DDR2 SoDimm iMac and Macbook Memory (http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Modules-Macbook-KTA-MB667K2-4GR/dp/B001265GI2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1296260848&sr=8-3)

The RAM looks right. If the link you gave above is to your model, then it looks ok...

So you have a SATA hard drive...
