I just installed a dawson fiber optic on my trojan (little bit of a hack job i must admit:embarassed:). I took it to the range today, and it seemed i was hitting about 1-2" low at 7 yards. I'm not sure if i was having an off day, or if the sights are causing me to shoot different than im used to. The dawson sight seems a bit taller than the stock one.

Secondly, how the hell do you know when the sight is centered? I put it over the same mark as the old sight, but it might be a millimeter or two off center. Any advice on how to get it perfectly centered?

did you measure the old sight before you ordered the new sight?
also how did you fit the new Dawson? you should have filed material off the bottom (per Dawson's instructions) to fit it.

i use a caliper to center the sights.

I filed off the front edge, like it said on the instruction booklet. That could very well be where i F'ed up. I thought it would make more sense to file the bottom, but the instructions said "front angle". I filed the edge of the sight towards the muzzle.

i got my info from the guys at Shooters Connection to confirm if it was the front or the bottom. they told me the bottom and that's how i fit my Dawson's

Crap. I'm probably gonna have to order a new one regardless....i filed this one before i even had the right tools. Thought it would be pretty simple (which im sure it is), but i jumped in and did what i thought would work. Dumb@$$.

First of all, my pictures are nowhere near as good as yours. Secondly, i did a HORRIBLE install, hence all the scratches. Is this how a functional sight should look though? Look at the gap near the front of the sight. Please ignore the scratches for now:whistling::supergrin:

Yeah, i was gonna order a new sight and have a pro install it. Mostly its the sight that looks like hell, didnt mess up the slide too much. Im not too worried about the looks of the gun though.....its a range gun and i shoot the hell out of it.

I usually use one of my bent needle files for checkering with the safe edge toward the sight and file both the front and rear angle as evenly as possible and also the bottom with a standard file. After I get a good fit I strip it and then spray with Cerakote and reinstall.

In my experience you should always remove material from the bottom of teh sight until it starts into the dovetail, then press, or drive it in. I've installed sights from Yost, 10-8, Champion and Novak.

These Dawson front and Warren Tactical rear sights replaced Sig's contrast sights a few years ago and has been through three training classes, with thousands of Kydex holster draws.

the simple answer to your question is yes of course the front sight replacement can cause a point of impact change. also with the fiber optic your focus is drawn to the dot instead of the top of the sight which can cause you to aim differently.
