View Full Version : Ed Brown or Nighthawk?

In particular, Stainless EB SFC w/bobtail, naked slide, flush crown and slide stop vs. NH Predator II(undecided on magwell or bobtail) or Ladyhawk. Ladyhawk would possibly be in 9mm and in Titanium Blue. Also would lean hard toward having the Predator hardchromed. Main question is Brown vs. Nighthawk though. I was just throwing out what I was looking at exactly.

The predator is a super soft shooter. I have a full-size predator and the SFC. You can't miss with either.

The EB you are describing sounds very very nice.

While I think the Predators are nice, I prefer a standard bushing type barrel system, but that's just personal preference. I think the Ladyhawks are super sweet looking pistols. One in hard chrome or IonBond would be excellent I think.

I like the simplicity and classic lines and looks of Ed Brown pistols. But I own two Nighthawk pistols and they are fantastic weapons.

Much more about model than brand IMO. Both makers are quality companies so pick the model you want and let that be the deciding factor. I will say that NH has a better customer service reputation than Brown if that matters to you.

The SF carry wold be my choice from what you listed. But all of them would be nice :)

Well, I really like the coned barrel on the Predator. And would possibly have it bobtailed. But an EB Commander with a bobtail just seems right. I've always like the look of the LH. :dunno:

An Ed Brown bobtail is even worse. Pure junk. Don't waste your money. Buy 2 Kimbers instead.

Yes the Predator is a phenomenal 1911, I generally like Nighthawks better than ED, Wilson (Yes, some of them used to work there) Les, etc.

My gun when I can afford it is the GRP Recon. Also when you buy a Nighthawk they have this 6 mags for $99 deal, I think they still have that, call and ask, great customer service as well.

One of them, Ron Phillips, one of the co-founders of Nighthawk, is back at Wilson again. Never heard about the 6 mag deal, but I'll definately look into it.

My vote definitely goes to the NH considering I have one on order. Mine is a little different then the one you listed, but the Predator is really sweet!! I ordered mine sight unseen, but i got to fondle it at SHOT and I have been freaking out wanting it now!!! Tremendous quality.... Everything you would expect from a high quality company and they also have extremely good CS. Ive never dealt with EB, but have heard theres isnt that good. They both make extremely nice guns, but im not in a hurry for an EB, but i will get one eventually.

I just prefer the way Baers and SA Custom guns feel in hand. I love the tightness, toughness, and character they have.

Its really splitting hairs when comparing the top 1911s, to be honest. They're all great. It comes down to personal preference. :)

I think the Springfield TGO1 is maybe the best semi-custom currently available, this side of a Wilson Super Grade.

I'm not an expert on all those other brands but I do know that Nighthawk offers choices like if you want a Henie Str8 or Novak Night Sights, different finishes, they offer Laser Grips at $199 extra which are generally $220 to $250 plus tax and ship. A custom upgrade area to add more optional things and a guy I used to work with called them to have something engrave on the side but I forgot what it was. A good resource is also the Scottsdale Gun Club, if I'm correct I remember one of my active duty buddies said they were the largest dealer for Nighthawk.

Never had issues with their mags but why would a custom 1911 company with great guns and where a lot of those guys came from Wilson contract out low quality mags. I do prefer the Chip Power 10's. The Wilson 47's are good and I also like the blued one that comes with the S&W 1911 PD. I picked up some cheap Chip Shooting Star mags for like $15 that were solid. I never liked the 7 rounders from Kimber.

Pretty good read on the Vicker's. The Vicker's gun is now called the Enforcer and is a pretty awesome design!!! I wish I would have had the extra $ to do a Predator/Enforcer build like initially planning on. It was either that or the BD finish(which i really wanted)

I had a NH GRP with rail. Felt a bit big and heavy, and was sold at a significant loss on Gunbroker. There may be more depreciation with NH than with Wilson or Ed Brown. Yes, you may actually have to sell your gun one day. Ease of resale is a factor for some.

I actually preferred shooting my SA TRP at the range if I had both that day. That may be my bias against the rail guns, however. Performance was similar.

I am in the process of buying an Ed Brown Kobra Carry at the moment.

I don't particularly care for the NH front strap treatment. It is not consistent from gun to gun or model to model. Some have high cut, others look like a stock Colt with checkering starting 1/2 inch under the trigger gaurd. Some have a "fire road" line before the checkering starts.

I think the big and heavy issue was due to the rail, wouldn't you say?

None of the semi-customs hold their value well. Colts hold their value the best out of all the common 1911s.

Wilsons seem to hold value pretty well. A Wilson CQB bought 5 years ago for $1950 would still sell for about that amount now given the recent price increases for the new ones. Even the new resales seem to lose only about $300-500 max.
My GRP was $2700 new, sold for $1750 in basically mint condition. That's pretty low, considering I probably have over 100 sales on GB. Who knows, could have been a one time fluke.

For what it's worth, the NH was very well made, but that's a given once you enter into the over $2K range. I have seen some Talons that were fantastic. I like the option of using other grip safeties and thumb safeties.
