"Again I repeat myself – for a serious fighting or competition pistol, there is absolutely no need to buy a 1911. A good, functioning 1911 that will be reliable is going to cost about $1,000. That’s the price of entry. If you’re in love with the .45 ACP cartridge, for $1,000 you could get TWO M&P45 pistols and a couple of spare mags, or you could get 2 used Glock 19s, a holster, some mag carriers, and a pile of spare mags and even have money left over to take an entry level pistol class."

I decided to watch the grass grow than Top Shot, so I have no clue who this guy is.

I do agree with some of what he said.

That said, I'll actually find out how my 1911 holds up with actual use. No 2000-3000 rounds over 5 years, I'll know from actual experience, and that's what people should base their choice from.

It is different for LE that are shooters. IMO I would say the majority are not and do not take care of their weapons.

If I carried as a duty gun, I would probably clean and inspect atleast every 2-3 days. Do you really feel the majority of LE in the country would do this?

I'm not interrupting "hobbyist" that way, but others might. The point is actual use on a range/training environment. Shooting 1000 rounds a year is a hobbyist, IMO. I see the posts where someone has "500 flawless rounds" through their pistol, only problem is those 500 rounds have been over the course of 2 years. I have seen it.

Just like the topic of MIM vs XYZ, the more one shoots, the more things become obvious. Not picking a side, just my observation.

I have carried a sig 229 for 11 years as a duty gun. I carried a glock off duty for around 6 years. I put thousands of rounds thru both. The glock I am just all over the place. The sig I shoot pretty well. But with 1911s I just have quicker tighter groups. Don't get butt hurt I am not putting down other guns. Just for me I seem to handle the 1911 the best.

I see your point. My point is that I don't have to attend a "tacticle" type class where Im running around, doing summersalts, reloading with my toes, shooting zombie target, praising Larry Vickers, all while wearing BDUs that I never earned to be an effective user of a pistol. I'm not sure I've ever seen summersalts in a course, but do agree with you on some aspects of select classes. I like keeping my training realistic, not 8 mags on my belt, open carry, blah, blah, blah.

Overall, I agree with you. The main point is using what you have enough to remain proficient.

Honestly magazines and TV is some of the worst stuff Ive seen!! You can tell exactly who is sponsoring the show or article all the time. Kind of like on "Best Defense" Michael Baine, who has some of the highest end 1911's and over like 300 some odd handgun collection says his EDC is a SR9C!! LOL ya right!! Dont get me wrong, the gun is not a bad option for some, but come on!! I wonder how Pincus got out of using a Ruger? In his demonstrations he is always using a Glock.

Caleb pretty much proved to me all of his statements should be ignored. As soon as someone poses opinion as fact, their comments are instantly ignored by me. I feel there are tons of better suited duty gun options out there for LE, but would easily put the 1911 in the top 10 or maybe even 5.
Like I said in a previous post about a similar topic. The downfall of the 1911 as a DG can easily be fixed by more of an emphasis on training and inspection and cleaning. Basically ingraining the importance of weapon maintenance into officers the same way they do the EXACT translations of the 4th amendment!

Anyway, I find the part where the author says "don’t really take classes or shoot competitively." Hmmm, yea...all those 1911 race guns in competition must be figments of many people's imagination. Better tell people that are running 1911s in classes that they are using something that is only a hobby like collecting stamps or making bird houses.
