View Full Version : Thinking of 930 SPX. QC ?

My 500A is getting old.

I have a shotgun itch that won't go away, so I'm thinking of a 930 SPX. Feels so sweet in my hands and I like the semi auto/sights etc.. Price is great too.

Can knowledgeable owners or shotgun experts share with me any QC issues that still remain with the latest 930's being shipped?

I've read about front sights not being straight and extension tubes being bent.

Your knowledge is very much appreciated.

Thanks fellas,

I recently posted my experience when I was looking for my very own 930 SPX. I received a supposedly "brand new" one with a shorter front receiver pin, screws on top pic rail filled with red loctite, factory finished nicked to hell, etc. all with a January 2011 build date. I rejected that one and held out for another. A week later my local FFL got another one through a different distributor and it was cherry. Yeah, I'd say Mossberg definitely has to work on quality control...but once you get one in mint shape, you will not be dissapointed...

The 930 club here on GT is growing all the time. m24shooter, Frankr, and Scrappy are the guys that probably shoot their 930's as much if not more than me? (that I know of). There should be more than enough threads on the 930 here if you do a search but I am always up for a new topic. I just shot mine last weekend lol! I love it!

mdfd's story is a nightmare but i would not say it is common. Do your home work and only take home a model that passes your close inspection. Mine has been flawless right out of the box so I cant comment on any of the negative issues you heard about. maybe I got lucky?

Just make sure you field strip the gun, clean it well and lube it "BEFORE" you go shooting. Many folks have reported issues and it seems like a common thread that they did not clean and oil their guns before breaking it in.

Also, cock the gun before you remove the trigger assembly or parts may fly!!!!!!!

I have a few videos on the 930 if you are interested? I'll post some here if you want to see them?

Please do, I know nothing about the 930 in terms of breakdown etc.

Any knowledge gained is good knowledge.

What lube do you use?

Thanks!

What kind of pistol grip/stock did you put on it and do you know how it compares to a Knoxx? Have you had any issues with '3 slugs?

mixflip

Choate is the only pistol grip that I know of for the 930. Knoxx does not make a recoil reducing stock for th e930 that I know of. SO your only option right now is a Choate pistol grip or a standard rifle style stock.

I might have missed it before, but I do not remember that piece of information in your story.
Given that relevation, I would change my impression that your gun might not have been NIB to it most certainly was NOT. Red LocTite on a factory new gun from OFM? Given the remainder of your issues with the 590 pin in the 930 and the messed up finish would rule out it being a NIB gun. It sounds like somebody tried pulling a fast one.
OP: The current issues with the 930s are mainly centered on the Choate extensions. The springs are too long or the transition areas are too rough. Somehow, there are still some first production run barrels being put on new production guns (they have the forward sling stud in the forearm and the new round bolt knob). I've seen one of those that was canted.

First and foremost let me just say that I LOVE MY 930 SPX.
But my experience in finding one is what it is. No one will really know for sure what I got the first time around, but when your local dealer maintains that it was BNIB and that he has a good, longstanding relationship with that particular distributor even after I repeatedly asked him if he was sure it was BNIB, what else can I do but accept what he says at face value? I received a dud the first time around, it happens. I did the right thing by not accepting it and holding out for another sample which came in thru the same dealer, different distributor, and was in mint shape. And BTW, there are traces of red loctite on one of the pic rail screw on my most recent factory new Mossberg 930 SPX as well (just not overflowing like the previous one I mentioned and it looks like it might have been wiped down, leaving traces on the head of the screw)...

Moral of the story: Like Mixflip said....Just check the particular firearm thoroughly before you take it home. If it does not pass your inspection, don't accept it and find one that does. The End.

I was looking in to the 930 SPX for quite a while as well..
However, now I'm leaning toward an FN SLP.

Mdfd, those are different screws than what I've seen, so it may very well be that OFM figured out that they had the screws wrong and started LocTiting them and using different screws. That would be a positive step.

Wish they would have put this style stock on instead of that weird club foot looking one.

This is the Mossy SA-20 btw.

Not a real good pic, but here you go

I have been very pleased with my 930SPX. I am looking to get a barrel / tube clamp that I can mount both a Surefire and a sling swivel too, and haven't found "the one" yet. But the shotgun has met / exceeded expectations.

Im real lucky I guess Bexause my 930 SpX has not hAd one problem - I bought mine on Super Bowl Sunday 2010 ... Mainly bexause All of GlockTalk was raving about them - everyone wanted one and no one could find them , across fhe country. I'm nt rich but had saved alot for guns and in Jan I had fallen for / came close to buying a Benelli M2 Factical. But guys who were respected and knowledgeable were posting on the forums saying they loved theirs - Mix and Frank and M24 - these guys bought thueir Spx and loved them so when I saw one at Dicks , at half the price of fhe Benelli I had almost bought tje day before , I gist bought it - no ideas about q control problems etc.

To this day I am lucky with it - its my Pride and glory firearm ...'it's the one people want to see what it is etx and i love it. Enough so that I bought it an Aimpoint R-1 for Christmas !woohoo! Combine that with a LimbSaver and it makes shooting it both crazy easy , wicked fun, and Delta Force effective. Seriously. I could be a D Teams shotgunner with my Combat 930 SPX I would totally rock.

Mine has been nothing but trouble the day I bought it. Im finally gonna break down and call Mossberg for a shipping label. Mine went from a few jams the first time out to barely firing any types of shells and they dont even have a primer dimple. I was really excited about this shotgun but now after I get it fixed im gonna trade it for another 870.

See all I'm gonna say is that's real real unfortunate- mines been literally perfect and I even had go get a Choate +1 mag extension to replace the factory +3 extension. My 930 Spx is what I'd trust my life to and what I'd trust my friends and family lives to if it ever came to that.

Glad to hear you got a good one. The good news is, Mossberg (so far) has treated me right, the lady is sending me a shipping label and I will report back on how the rest of this goes.

Iíve been looking for a 930 SX but they never seem to be in stock and the Cheaper Than Dirt web site says it canít be back ordered. I thought maybe they were discontinued.

nah they are not discontinued. Rather they produce their products in batches so the distribution and availability may be inconsistent particularly around the end and beginning of the year...

If you have a Dick's in your area, check it out, the two near me, typically have one in stock.
