Hi there!

Just put together an AR15 pistol but was curious, what are the legalities of putting a front pistol grip or a magpul AFG on the hand guards? Does that start to be a contradiction of it's "pistol" designation?

They are NOT legal on a pistol.

does the ar pistol have to be on a dedicated lower marked "pistol"? Or can I use any old lower to build it on?

It must be on a virgin receiver or one that has never been a rifle.
If the receiver was sold to you as a rifle you can not build a pistol on it.
If the dealer wrote "rifle receiver" it can not be used to build a pistol.
