If you wanted a higher capacity and bayo lug then you should of gone with the 590 instead of the 88.

Make sure you break it down and clean it real good - none of this " just shoot it " or " Its a Mossberg "' jimjam flimflam -- not smart , not Safe , and certainly not right.

If you take care of it it will take care of you-'and once you've cleaned it , my personal recommendation is run some 00 Buck through it to seat the parts properly and " break it in before breaking it in"'- then proceed to pump as many Rounds of bulk pack goodness as you can stand.

I'll get what's a good deal , which for me is Federal 7 1/2 or 8 shot 100'rounder boxes from Walmart , aroind 25ish dollars - hey and then just keep kabooming it at the range. Literally the more you shoot it the more broken in , smoother safer slicker etc it will become.

Congrats and have fun and don't forget to keep it clean and lubed. Lube especially when new , I believe aippi has detailed instructions on the importance of that on his Website , I learned from reading it

yea i bought the 100 rd pack from wally world, gonna start breaking in tomorrow after a good cleaning and lubing

can u please provide a link on the aippi mentioned

thank you

http://www.aiptactical.com/Breaking_In_the_870.html

The link and his entire site / company seems to revolve around Remingtons and especially the 870 but the advice etc makes sense and I learned a lot from reading it and applied quite a bit to my 930'Spx

I bought that same shotgun this past winter. Mine came with a pistol grip included in the box which I currently have on the gun. I actually cut about 2 inches off the synthetic stock to make it fit more like the 12" LOP Hogue stock and I just shaved the stock rubber pad to fit the new dimensions. Runs great. If I come across some extra whatever money I think I am gonna pick up the Hogue Tamer pistol grip and maybe a heat shield just for kicks but that's about it.

i think im gonna do the ATI folding stock, side saddle and maybe a fiber optic sight...anyway to increase the capacity on this thing?

If I wanted a Glock ,I would not have bought a WW2 "Bringback War Trophy" 1911A1...

I've got two suggestions:

#1 Get a light for it. Lot's of ways to do that, and not terribly expensive (can be, but does not have to be)

#2 Just add a stretch cuff for a few extra shells.

Call it done. It is just fine how it is.

The elastic buttcuffs like to slide on the stock unless you put a rear sling stud through it and it makes shooting offhand around a barrier a pain.

^thats is what i thought as well, but i was thinking id give it a try, for a few more bucks i can have a dedicated side saddle, so i may just opt for that route

The Cuff is easily removed and can me modded to slip over sling loop .Disdane of the Plastic stuff is why I switched to Wood Furniture (Painted Black) so adding more tacticool accesories is not the direction I wish to go (Except increased capacity & Bayo lug)

Laserlyte makes a great Tri rail mount you should definetly look into it if you plan on putting a light on it.

i must say i am very very happy after a quick visit to the range today

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v476/fluxmr2spyder/18d9262e.jpg

ran about 30-40 rounds of federal walmart ammo thru it and no issues, i would no doubt trust this "cheapo" shotgun to protect my household

and on top of that it was a lot of fun to shoot, very simple and easy to operate

the safety didnt bother me, as a lot of people complain about that came from a model 500, so far i just wish the padding on the buttstock was a bit cushier to absorb more of the recoil but i will have a more detailed review once i get more rounds down range

everything hit at about 15-25 feet :)

at one point the paper target was split in half (sorry no pic)

Hi, I'm new here, and just recently acquired the Maverick 88 myself. Already I'm quite fond of it. With the addition of a pistol grip with collapsible stock, and a limbsaver, I could easily fire this thing all day. The cycle is smooth and reliable, haven't had a jam yet.

That said I would give fair warning to check for compatibility carefully when ordering parts for it. For the most part it shares parts in common with the Mossberg 500 but some parts aren't compatible. It's also not drilled for additions to the top of the receiver, so forget adding rails or sidesaddles that fit the Mossberg 500 unless you plan to have it drilled or do some major gunsmithing yourself. There's still plenty of customization options for it, but just check carefully when ordering parts.

I'd also point out that the 28" barrel is crazy long, and it could use cutting down, but if you do so, you sacrifice the threading for the interchangeable chokes and will have to have it re-threaded or live with a cylinder bore. Currently I'm opting for the latter, but I wouldn't rule out the option entirely.

You could also just purchase a shorter barrel for it, but I personally have a bit of trouble justifying barrels that are half the price of the gun versus a few minutes of hacksaw work and a bit more of filing and cleaning up.

Anyway there are still plenty of options for this puppy and I'm quite glad to make it my first new shotgun since childhood.

thanks for the input

i have decided to keep the 88 mostly factory stock, apart from the shot shell sleeve, fiber optic front sight and a light mount

Check out my Maverick 88 video. P.S. there is a gun hating Brit on there right now leaving anti-American comments if you want to read some interesting anti-gun banter?

I got them both at "The Gun Store" here in Las Vegas if I remember right? Any Mossberg part will pretty much fit on the Mav so many gun stores have parts in stock.

A heads up on that heat shield. The heat shield will not fit a ribbed barrel, however the ribbing acts as a heat sink, which helps a little. Just don't slide your hand over the barrel while firing.

FLuXmr2spyder
03-30-2011, 18:50
yup, mine is NOT ribbed
