So from what I gather 1911 is a popular format made by many different manufactuers correct?
If so, are they all made from an original frame or are they each different makes with vast differences?
Who is the original/ more "popular" maker?:dunno:
Colt is the original, but all use pretty much the same frame design.

Yes.
BIGTIME. That's what's so great about the platform. You can have EXACTLY what you want.

Yeah, check out the sticky at the top of the forum. Bac1023 has some great reviews of a LOT of different 1911s from entry-level to full blown customs. There are a TON of threads about 1911 recommendations at various pricepoints too, so spend some time digging through the forum and get strong with the search-fu.

+1
This was my first, I've been really happy with it after 1,200 rounds, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, but I'd read bac's sticky first!

Agree. Glock is way better than 1911 because more police officers use them. :whistling::upeyes:

because of the non-standard slide it doesn't usually fit in standard 1911 holsters.
You can't go wrong with a Springfield for the money in something like a Range Officer or Mil-Spec. If your budget allows, Kimber and Bear are great 1911,s. Then, of course, you have your Wilson Combats and such.

Yeah, that Glock 7 is all polymer, and it cost more than your annual salary...

You may want to check out some local gun shops to see some of the 1911s side-by-side. As there are many great options in this platform, a lot of it may come to personal preference. If you can find a good used 1911, you are likely to get more for your money. In terms of new, there are some solid offerings from Smith and Wesson, STI, and Dan Wesson (if you can get one closer to the old prices), and Colt to name a few.

Actually they're the safest ones to be around, they just shoot their selves.
strickly a matter of personal opinion, here's my take on 1911 having shot them since the time the only choices were GI surplus or colt:
if you want to spend under 600 bucks-
1st choice- used Colt
2nd Choice Springfield or RIA
600-1000-
1st Choice-new Colt
2nd choice STI
3rd choice springfield
1000+-
les baer
my opinions and that is all they are are based on thiese factors:
1) Colt will always give you back what you paid for if or when you want to trade up- I tend to go thru guns having one for a year or two then selling/trading it for something else I want, so resale value is important to me.
2) Colt is the only maker with guns in the under 1K range made in the U.S. except for Kimber which has a well deserved reputation for delivering variable quality- Some kimbers run great while others are functional nightmares.
3) once you get above 1k finding a used les baer for 1500 seems more logical to me than getting into other makers custom shops
wow, thanks guys
actually that sticky answers lots of questions but why no love for Sig Sauer 1911's?
Because they are made in Exeter and real Sigs are/were made in Germany. That's semi-joking but SigSauer is best known for their classic old school P series pistols like the P226, P228 and P220, their 1911s just don't make a lot of sense.

You forgot two of Exeter's finest...
The P250, which is worth half of what it was worth last year.......new.

Because it's not a 1911. It's a P220 Elite with a 1911 trigger.

Looking at my first 1911 as well. Did not want to spend a grand for the 1911. Only $600 for the gun or so and leaning to the Remington for my FIRST 1911.
and 4 Extra Chip McCormicks magazines ( $60 ), IWB holster ( $100 ), lots of ammo and then nothing but range time.
