Im looking to buy a 1911 commander for ccw. Other than the name is there that much difference? I've read alot of good reviews on the american classic. Would I be better off to buy the american classic and replace a few parts? Would it then be as well made as the colt? What mostly draws me to the colt is it's a true colt and the rollmarks but the rollmarks on the american classic is not that bad.

First off, welcome.

Why are you limiting yourself to those two?

Metro Arms, who builds American Classic, is a Filipino company. They make good products, but I wouldn't compare it to a Colt.

Welcome Blue. I agree with BAC. i like Colts. But it may be a good idea to take a look at several manufacturers before buying.

Instead of buying cheap then replacing parts...just save and spend more on a better pistol from the get-go. Buy once cry once.

I agree with Paul 100%, especially for a first 1911.

That said, please do yourself a favor and check out all options, not just what's in the case of your local gun shop.

Maybe check out some local ranges also to see what rental 1911s they have to get a feel for different brands. Either that or I'm sure there are members here that live near you and will be more than happy to meet you at a range with their heaters.

You could also consider an STI Ranger II. Very well made. I posted a review of my pair of IIs a while back.

Took my New ATI commander length 1911 to the range today,it was a solid performer with ball ammo but had a few hitches with the hollow points.I sent about 150 rounds downrange.Accuracy was good too.You might want to look into one of these.I think I'll get some corbon powerball because I'm going to use it in my carry rotation.

I would listen to the guys above. They can provide better advice on the platform than I could.

G27RR is right, the Ranger2 is a great gun. Just make sure you don't get a wimpy 9mm like he has pictured here. Get a man's caliber, I mean...seriously, who would trust their life to that sissy sized girlie round? :whistling:

ATI is another good one to look into.

colt all the way. nearly all the sub 600 guns out there are foreign made- a large percentage of the "american classic" metro arms ria iver johnson etc are all made by the same company in the phillipines. when it comes to 1911's I am a buy American guy. That leaves relatively few makers with the only large volume producers being Colt and Kimber. Sure there are small number producers like STI and Dan WEsson - both great guns by the way-But here is the honest reality:
buy a colt spend 900 bucks use it for five years sell it for something new get 800 bucks for it
buy something else spend 500 bucks another 200 inparts and 100 in labor use it for five years when its time to trade up remeber it will still be seen and valued as a 400 dollar phillipino gun- that is just the way it is.
