View Full Version : 3" inch barrel 1911?
A old timer I know is looking for a 1911 that has a 3 inch barrel. I know colt, springfield, and Kimber offer them. Any recommendations or experience with any of these? I also think S&W makes one in the pro series? Thanks Esox357.
Big fan of the offerings from Springfield and STI. Smith also makes one and ive heard nothing but good things. I have no personal experience with them though.

STI
I know I will hear about it but I'm just not a big fan of a 3" 1911. My experience is they are way to touchy on the reliability scale.

It would help if you give us a caliber. That should help narrow it down for you.

Glocks are available in most calibers

no, that would be my hemorrhoid donut.
I would go with a STI or Springfield. If you have issues, they'll take care of it.

My Kimber UC II has pretty much been flawless.. that being said, if I was to get another 3" 1911 I would go STI.. Kimbers can be hit and miss I lucked out and got a good one.. STI has a better track record imo..

I have a Springfield Micro G.I. and a couple Kimber Ultras. I am more partial towards my Kimbers. They shoot nice and smooth.
400 rounds through my smith pro series and after the 1 ftf I experience in the first mag it's been flawless since. Very accurate for a 3 inch.
STI Shadow, I carry and shoot this one a lot.

Bit less money, STI Escort

If you like Colt a whole lot and don't mind less features for the money, the Defender.

I have a S&W Pro Series Subcompact, and it is fantastic.
I would also add that the Shadow has seen over 2,000 rounds since I bought it about a year ago, and it has had just 1 failure of any kind in that time. I have two officer and two commander sized STIs and they have all been terrific right out of the box.

I have a Kimber Crimson Ultra Carry II. I have only had it for a few weeks and so far it been great. I have fired over 650 rounds with LSWC, FMJ and JHP without any issues. Zero feeding problems and accuracy is very good, very good.
Here is a vote for the Springfield EMP. I have one in 9mm and it is one of the most accurate and smooth guns I own. Put that one on your short list.

I had a great experience with my Colt easy to shoot and went bang every time. My buddies kimber was a disaster. We had to send it back to kimber and the returned it in a timely manner. First trip back at the range and the gun went click instead of bang.
I continue to hear great things about STI. They aren't easily found in my neck of the woods so I don't have firsthand experience with them. I would consider the SW pro series compact as well as SW has always had great customer service in my dealings with them. Having said that, it took me a bit to get my SW gunsite edition running the way I want it to.
To be honest though, I don't know that a 3 inch 1911 would be on the top of my list. I got rid of mine when I realized that a lightweight commander size 1911 is almost as easy carry for me and a lot more fun to shoot (and easier to shoot well).

I've owned 2 Kimber Ultra Carry IIs. My first one was flawless with all ammo and mags but Wilson magazines. My current UC is flawless with all mags and ammo I own.
