Threading a ban-barrel

I have a AR-15 made during the ban years, and is their any reason why I could not thread the barrel myself using a 1/2 x28 die. Seems like a simple solution for adding a muzzle brake to an AR that has an non threaded barrel?
Or what am I missing?:dunno:
