View Full Version : Any input on Federal "Classic" 45acp 185gr.JHP???
I purchased a box of 50rds of Federal "Classic" 45acp from Cheaper Than Dirt for a little under $20.00 + shipping. I didn't think that was too bad of a deal. It has a 185gr. JHP rated at 950fps. I think this will be better for home defense than the Remington 185gr.+P Golden Sabers I bought. Those are rated at 1140fps and have heavy recoil, muzzle blast, and a big fireball:wow:. It just seems a bit too much.
Anyone have any input on this Federal Classic ammo???
Good ammo. It will go bang and put holes in targets... and other things. It will not likely perform up to the most extreme demands of the cognizant. But it will do what is needed... make nice big holes in targets... and other things. Remember, a hole is a hole is a hole. Put enough holes in the right places and targets calm down... along with other things. HD is not a fashion statement. BTW, I am currently using plain Jane Remington 180 gr. JHP .40 S&W in my G-22 and Winchester White Box 230 gr. JHP in my S&W 625-2. Now in my 21-4 I'm using Blazer 200 gr. JHP Gold Dots. Any of these will work just fine. JMHO.
If it feeds well, it's actually a pretty good nonbonded round. As you note, much less blast & recoil vs the +P. It over expands IMO from a 5"bbl, but in the shorter 3 1/2"-4" blls, it makes a nice 70cal & stays together in wetpack tests.
The Federal 185 grain JHP Classic was one of the first standard velocity 45 caliber JHP's to really expand at standard velocities. Most others used to be mainly for a legal hunting bullet for use in 1911 pistols and would only expand at +P velocities. The Federal bullet doesn't always feed in all 1911 pistols but it's a good expander and may not have any feeding issues in a Glock but you should find out. It does usually expand at lower velocities than others. The Remington 45 ACP bullets are very reliable feeding bullets. I couldn't find the non +P 185 grain Golden Saber so I went with non +P 230 grain Golden Saber as I didn't want the muzzle blast of +P ammo either.
I'll be using these in a Glock 21, and I will test a few mags to see how they perform. I don't expect to have any problems, my G21 has been super reliable:supergrin:. I didn't want the +P Golden Sabers either, but that was all they had in stock so I bought two boxes. I went through one box, and while it fed, fired, and extracted fine, this stuff is vicious. I was surprised by the recoil, muzzle blast and flash. It just doesn't seem like it would be good for home defense at night. While I could put up with the recoil and blast, the flash would no doubt be blinding.
Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.
They work just fine in my 30sf
They are not as loud as the 230 HST+P
I just got the Federal 185gr. JHP ammo today, nice looking ammo. The bullets are very nicely made with no nose deformations and very uniform deep hollow cavity. I think this stuff at 950fps should do just fine. It's a shame the brass isn't nickle coated, but other than that it looks like high quality ammo.
Anyone have chrono results for this from say a Glock 30? Ratings are usually for 5" barrels.
also have two boxes of Federal "Classic" 45acp185 gr coming from Cheaper TD
Already have some
plus some 230 Gr Federal Premium HST
and 230 gr Gold Dots GDHP
