I was looking into the S&W 1911 PD and the S/A Range Officer. I wish they still made the dan wesson cbob's. Recommendations?

TX, how can you pass up looking at STIs from the Lone Star State?

Out of those two, Range Officer. Also look at the STI Trojan.

yep...look at the trojan for sure. leaves you some room for ammo/accessories and is on par or arguably better than the RO.

With adjustable rear sights: STI spartan at $628 delivered or STI trojan for $999 delivered.

Range Officer is nice but the STI options fit my needs better (read: budget). Although the RO comes with 2 or 3 mags. The STI only 1. But the RO will need an ILS removal and rebuild kit (about $12) and new springs.

Get an STI.

At the OP's budget I say Trojan all the way.... though I'm very pleased with my Spartan in 9mm.

Only reason I didn't consider Sti is bc I don't know too much about them.
Usage? Range? Carry?
all the above

STI Ranger 2 (if you want 4.25") or STI Trojan (if you want 5"). Both the same price. If you're going to carry, I'd say the Ranger 2.

It's personal preference. Most just hear it's a "bad" thing so they just jump on the trian of no ILS. This is SA's own gun lock, which is part of the MSH. just a stronger mainspring than the standard 19lbs spring.

The Trojan costs a bit more than $800-$900 though.

I have my choices down to the Kimber Pro carry II, S&W1911PD, and Colt Commander. I just don't like the Sti's.

The Trojan is better than any of those others you mentioned, it just costs more.

That's money well spent.

G27RR has one in .45 and 9mm and speaks very highly of both.

The SW 1911 PD '5 w/rail is one of my favorite 1911's.

Very nice pistols, nothing else that size under $1K is anywhere close in my opinion.

You should be happy with either Springer RO or STI Trojan or Ranger.

S&W- made in USA
Springfield - mostly made in Brazil
STI USA made just a hair above your budget at around 1k new
Colt- the original made in USA 1911- various models well withing your budget
I am a fan of used guns- the 1911 has been around long enough you (with the help of a knowledgeable 1911 person)should have no problem finding a real nice used 1911 for well under 800 bucks AND stick with a made in USA product

Yes. I think the Spartan is the only one that uses the Armscor frame and slide.

I have had good luck with my Kimber Custom II. It isn't the fanciest or prettiest girl at the dance, but she goes bang when I pull the trigger.

Really wanted a new 1911 for the anniversary year. The 100-year roll mark isn't loved by all, but I really like it and, frankly, wanted a Colt.
Found a new in the box Colt XSE for $870. Haven't shot it yet (arrived two days ago), but I really like the feel of the thing.

However, I would have no reservations about an STI. Some of the guys I shoot IDPA with have them and just love them.
