I picked up a box of 180 gn Hornaday TAP FPD today. I saw it at Academy for $15 and figured I would grab a box at that price. Anybody use this or heard anything good about it? If it's good stuff I will go back and get a few more boxes. Thanks Jeff

It uses the XTP JHP design which is the first bullet design offered by a major manufacturer (1991) to comply with the FBI test protocols. The design is common to all of the Hornady pistol ammo line (Custom, TAP CQ and FPD) the differences being the inclusion of flash suppressed powders in the TAP line.

The XTP typically offers expansion to about 1.5x caliber and deep penetration. It is very accurate, too.

Old school bullet that still works.

From Hornadys site.

It looks like it's some pretty good stuff. I guess I will go back and grab a few more boxes. This is the best price ($15) I have seen around here for PD rounds. Thanks for the info guys.

I had bought a few of these boxes in 180gr to try out of my G27 awhile back. I remember that it had a very soft recoil, and was incredibly accurate in my gun. I have read that it penetrates very well, but expansion is not huge. But, as we all know, penetration is the more important factor.

FWIW you can buy more modern well proven rounds for cheaper online. Buying 20 round boxes is expensive even at $15 a piece. You can buy boxes of 50 quality SD ammo for well under $30 each on line. You have to pay for shipping but just buy a bunch of boxes at once.

I have always liked the Hornady XTP loads. I prefer loads that offer deep penetration. I think the 180 gran TAP is a fine choice. Hornady's quality control is also very good and the XTP bullets are known for their accuracy as already mentioned.

This has been my experience as well. Finding it at a good price, plus at Academy makes it easy, too.

As noted, old school, but still effective. I like the XTP, penetrates well always expands some. I find that the medium wts in any caliber will penetrate about as far as the heavier bullets in other designs. This allows you to have a softer recoiling load that still performs well in compact. ltwt guns. I carry the 200grXTP in my ltwt Comm.

I also like the 200 grain Hornady XTP in 10mm. Some of the speciality loads run faster but the Hornady is closer to its listed velocity and is a well balanced all round load for packing in my Glock 29.
