View Full Version : best broadheads for Black Bear?
I applied for my lottery permit for black bear hunting here in MN. I have never hunted bear and have always wanted to. My friends and I are planning on using our bows should our group get selected. I use Rage two blade broadheads for whitetail and wanted some opinions about them for bear. Anyone ever used them on bear? How did they work? What broadhead do you use for game bigger than whitetail? <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
I would go with a Muzzy 3 Blade or Grim Reapers IMHO. Both have harvested many big game animals. I would be concerned with the rage losing alot of energy entering the ribs because of the wide cutting diameter.
Shoot Straight let us know how it goes
I have never shot mechanicals and don't plan on it. I've used Muzzy's for a long time on deer and have never had a complaint. If you know how to tune your arrows and bow shooting traditional broadheads is no problem. But if you don't and shoot mechanicals all you are really doing is avoiding a problem (ie your bow is out of tune and arrows are unbalanced) instead of fixing it and this can manifest itself in other problems as well. A black bear isn't much different than a deer although shot placement is a little different.
The problem with mechanical is not worth it and nor would I use it on a bear.
Some of the negatives towards mechanical over std BHs;
they cost more
they are not reliable over traditional BHs
can fail to open
penetrated less than a typical 2/3 blade BH
steep angles create other obstacles with expanding
they are mechanical and mechanical things can fail
I would only use a mechanical on a animal that doesn't need as much penetration such as a turkey or coyote imho
I have never had any problems with 3 blade 100 gr muzzy broadheads for black bear.
I like Muzzy's too. I'd go with the heaviest that your bow can accurately shoot. My BIL took one two years ago when he ambled by his deer stand. Shot was straight down, got a lung and the heart, didn't go far.
Best eating Bear I ever had.
