what if a you had to fire a 9mm in your house for self defense - anyone know if that would permanently hurt your hearing?

i could only imagine what an AK round going off would do to you

i thought i might get more serious answers here than in general glocking

There is a possibility of hearing loss, particularly with a high power rifle as you noted...but if we need to fire to keep from being murdered, we have to ask ourselves, "What will we hear in the grave?"

Personally, I keep a pair of active muffs in bedroom or hotel room, ready at hand. There won't always be time to access them, but if circumstances allow, they're usually quicker to put on than the time it takes to unlimber a long gun.

A scroll through earlier entries in the GATE self-defense forum will find other short discussions on this topic.
