I do not recall this tantalizing rifle getting much buzz during the 2011 SHOT Show coverage...and I don't understand how the heck it couldn't have created a huge buzz. A 7.62/.308 AR with fully ambi controls that accepts P-Mags...and also becomes a 5.56 by just swapping out the upper with a mil-spec 5.56 upper (ANY mil-spec upper)...how completely sweet is that?!!!

I am so very intrigued by this rifle. If it works and if it is priced right, this could be one heck of a hot selling gun for Colt.

Anybody got any more info on this rifle? I'm going crazy trying to find any and all the info I can on 'em. (You might have noticed that already...)

rumor has it OBL was whacked with a very similar rifle in the 7.62 mode

I saw it at Shot and was wondering the same thing. Not much buzz about this cool concept of a Colt AR?

Its a piston. Ew

My understanding is that this is one of the more credible sources, and although he initially was told it was a 7.62, he now believes it was an HK416.

Most sources have all now agreed/confirmed that it was an HK416...but the internet rumor mill will have people saying it was anything/everything from a ivory gripped SAA to a phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range...and most people couldn't care less...myself included.

The Colt specs say Direct Gas, which I would take to mean DI. Maybe someone that owns one can let us know the real deal.

They had a piston variant at the SHOT Show, but the standard variant is DI...as were the majority of the units at the show (from what I can tell). I think they only had one piston example at the show and several DI's.

I think that many credit cards are gonna get a work-out over this bad-boy. For anyone that already has a 5.56 AR, they can buy this one and have a true multi-caliber platform with a switch of an upper (if that is indeed the truth.)

I think it will be an even bigger seller with those of us that have not yet taken the plunge into the Black Rifle waters. Buy one complete rifle, and then for the cost of an upper and mags you have a completely different caliber. So for the cost of a SP901 and a 5.56/.223 upper (and a handful of P-Mags for both calibers) you have a lot of versatility...IMHO. This rifle has what the ACR is missing (and should have had/originally intended to have by MagPul)...the ability to jump back and forth between the two key cartridge lengths easily. This makes the new Colt rifle a multi-caliber dynamo. In theory, any caliber upper that can be fired using a mil-spec AR 5.56 lower or 7.62 lower should be able to be mated to/fired from this rifle's lower.

Not for sale yet, Colt is saying they hope be selling them late this year. I have not come across any price estimates. Price range is one of the things I am most interested in trying finding out...hoping maybe someone here might know more...

I'm gonna say...meh...

Being a Colt product, I'm sure it will be good quality, but honestly...I think I'd rather have a 6920 and some other dedicated .308 (maybe an LMT). The whole two in one deal doesn't do it for me.

My mistake.

I have been reading more about this and it does appear to be DI. I'm not even sure why I said that...
