Hi, I thought about posting this question in the “Caliber Corner (http://www.glocktalk.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=31)” but I wanted to ask you Black Rifle guys. I have a friend who asked me a rifle question, but since I’m mainly into handguns I could not really help him such…so I’ve come here.

He has an AR-15 M4 style carbine with a 16” barrel (1x9 twist) and wants to know what 5.56 x 45mm ammo (gr weight, etc.) is good for all around SHTF/TEOTWAWKI protection for that caliber.

M193

Relatively cheap, relatively accurate. Toss in some M855 if you want some penetration.

Unless he wants to be trendy and spend alot of extra money he could also go with the high price Horn 75 gr TAP, Blackhills OTM 75gr etc. But really XM193 / XM855 should kill the zoombies just fine!

if this ammo is for everyhting from home defence to hunting, finding one load would not be easy.

my choice would be one of the corbon loads that use's the barne X-bullet. that way you get good expansion along with good penetraction. that makes the 5.56 into an ok hunting round. if self defence is the main goal then the ones posted above make good choices. i'd also throw in the 55 or 60 grain V-max.

I like to have TSX and Bonded soft points on hand.

My choice for all defense and hunting with my 5.56 caliber rifles is with Black Hills 77 grain open tip match (otm). It is stunningly accurate, and is terminally effective from a variety of barrel lengths and at a variety of ranges.
