Well, i have been contemplating and now, after watching the guys shoot CMP today, i have decided i want to shoot that. I have no rifles that fit the criteria so i need to buy/build another.

If i understand the rules correctly. I need a 20" basic A2 or A4 type rifle. A quad rail is acceptable and a trigger up to 4.5lbs is also ok. I want a 5.56 with 1/8 or 1/7 twist.

Now, searching the web i realize not many complete 20s are available and uppers seem to be hard to find. Gunbroker has a few but they are 1/9 twist.

What are some makes and models i can buy off the shelf? on the web they are out of stock or don't offer what i want.

With a model, i can call a few local dealers and see if they can get it.

Also, do any of you guys shoot CMP with the AR? Do you have any tips or tricks?

Off the shelf? Try a RRA NM from Legal Transfers.

Don't mind waiting and pushing some pins together? Check out John Holliger's uppers at White Oak Precision and/or White Oak Armament.

you have to be careful with quadrails- the only ones legal are the same as issued on m16A4 which don't free float the barrel and would not be an advantage. You need to look at national match uppers designed for cmp shots- regular handgurads with a fre float tube underneath- for starters look at gunbroker -I bought a new dpms top end with all the cmp match mods for under 500 bucks new a couple years back- not the best out there but a good place to start. a standard ar lower with an a1 or a2 fixed stock is also fine to start with- can always drop a match grade trigger group in later.

Here are the rules: http://www.odcmp.com/Competitions/Rulebook.pdf

No collapseable stocks allowed! Have to be a A2/1 stock:supergrin:

Colt Match Target is what I own.

I sent out some emails.

Those White Oak are some fancy uppers but not really a lot more if i get a basic rifle and then start changing it.

Thanks for the links, i knew there had to be someone specializing in this somewhere.

How about Rainier Arms they have 20inch barrels and will build it for you if you like.

After calling, emailing and stopping in at a few local gun shops i found it will be easier to buy the upper and build the lower.

White oaks seem to be the best upper at $700 with up to an 8 week wait.
I can get the DPMS DCM for $600 within a week.

I did buy a CD stripped lower locally, Kinda cool it's a local firearm maker even though they went out of business.

Now i can get a Geissele 2 stage and spoil myself.

Well, my new WOA upper showed up today.

I got a Charles Daly lower, DPMS lpk, Geissele service match trigger, model 1 stock and a Turner sling.

It ended up cost more than I initially wanted to spend but now I have a very accurate rifle. I can't use it as an excuse now, any errors and it will be me.

Looks like I will be at the range this weekend getting some practice for the match at the end of the month.

I Shoot an M1A for high power. I don't understand why your not allowed to use M4 type rifles. So many of our troops use them now it's just as fair as using an A2.

I went with a BCM upper, blem-lower with a RRA 2 stage trigger. The whole package was less than $800. Keep us posted on your progress.

foxtrot- it is just the rules- in military sponsored matches m4's are allowed for eic matches. The vast majority of deployed troops are issued m4 carbines-but they are technically carbines not rifles- the cmp rules are what they are. You can put all kinds of mods on the inside of the rifle but the exterior has to be the same as a issue m16 a2 or a4 with the exceptions listed in cmp rules.
another poster at another site has ,to no avail, tried to convince the cmp they should be legal.
They would be a distinct DISADVANTAGE since they have a very short sight radius and the matches have to be shot with irons
