Just got a Colt 6920 today

My first AR-15/M4/ I don't even know the lingo properly.. I've moved from handguns (Glock, what else?) to AK platform (Saiga 12 shotguns, also a Draco "pistol" - really more like a short barrel rifle), and now finally here.

I picked this up used for a good price (I know, I know, I've read about how Colt is overpriced). It was essentially new (under 100 rounds fired, and looks perfect) for $1025. I know there is cheaper out there, but I like higher quality firearms, what can I say. Plus, I figure resale value is high in case I change my mind later.

Anyway. What is the first thing to do or think about with this new gun? Shoot it. I know. But got to wait at least a week, because local indoor range won't let me shoot this there, so I need to drive out of town to the outdoor range.

All I can really see needing right away is a sling and some ammo. What do you guys think? Just wanted to say Howdy to this section of the forum!!!

All I can really see needing right away is a sling and some ammo. What do you guys think?

I used to be one of those "Colt is overpriced" people, but you are paying for resale value and added quality. I don't consider myself brand loyal to Colt though I have a few of their ARs and 1911's including a 6920.

It seems to me you have done your homework and made a good choice.

Definately get some ammo, I always keep a few cases minimum of various types for plinking and defense; for mags I like Pmags like everyone else but not exclusively.
Just don't overpay for aluminum ones, they go as cheap as $5-$10 new, rather than $20-$30 at the retail places.

You did very well, that's an excellent price for an excellent rifle. I would field strip, clean, inspect, lubricate, function check, and then go have fun. Good call on just a sling and some ammo, no point in adding things just for the sake of adding things, learn the rifle and iron sights, then decide what if any addons may benefit you.

Great choice!!! Here is my 6920 with a Larue free float rail, troy folding rear sight, magpul enhanced trigger guard and EOtech 512. Ive been shooting American Eagle XM193 55gr. and it shoots great! I still need me some Pmags though.

You've pretty much nailed it on the first try. Ammo first. Get some practice in and then look around for a carbine training class. Then and only after then, choose what you want added to the rifle. You will try this and you will try that and you will try several things. What works for one person may not work for another. And you will reconfigure the rifle several times until you find just the right way you like it. And then when you have it the perfect way, you'll change it to something else.

Good luck. That is a nice rifle.

As for ammo, I never buy online so I can't help you there. My local Wal-Mart sells 100 round boxes of Federal range .223 for like $43.
