Hope this is the correct forum - Mod's please move if not.

I am the original owner of a Series 70 Colt Combat Commander. Purchased in late 1970 (yes, I'm old).

I've done a few mods, and had a few done. Wilson did the sight installation, and Robar did the refinish. Everything else was done by me. Pic below:

After a range trip a few days back, I was cleaning the pistol and found something I should have found a few thousand rounds ago. There is a crack in the slide:

As the pictures show, the crack is by the front lightening cut at the breech face. Upon close examination, it appears the NP3 finish is in the crack. Assumption should be the crack was there before the finish was applied. The crack may have been induced during the stripping of the factory “Satin Nickel” finish prior to the NP3 being applied; if the slide was not properly stress relieved during the process. Based on the time line, I refuse to accuse any individual or company. The work was done 15+ years ago.

Since this is not a Warranty issue for Colt, I have a couple of questions:

I've already fired a couple thousand rounds after the work was done (post crack) - I don't think the pistol is really safe to shoot "as is" - agree or disagree and why, please?

Can this be repaired by any type of welding (by a competent gunsmith)?

By the time I replace the slide, sights, finish work, I can buy another complete pistol.

I really hate to relegate this one to "Sit in the safe" status, but not sure about shooting it in it's current condition.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Wow, what a bummer. Hope you get it resolved and the gun stays in action!

Series 70 pistols have 5 inch barrels and collet bushings your pistol is not a series 70 simply because it was made in the 70's.

Bummer about the cracked slide.

the combat commander did not have the collet bushing. the barrel on the combat commander is shorter than the five inch govt model barrel.
sure looks like a series 70 to me. i hope you can get it fixed.

The crack is all the way through the thin web, there is no place for it to go and cause pieces to fly off.
I'd shoot it and just inspect the slide when I cleaned.

the crack is in a place where a good smith or metalurgist should certainly be able to do something. just shoot some light target loads in it for now.
