I bet they either reconfigure that counter or change policy after that. I haven't read the articles about it yet (although I know it headlined either the P1 or O.com mailer today), but the first few seconds are a good example of the bad guy telegrahing what he was going to do.

This.

Our booking is about 4x the size of that but it is (and always should be) elevated. There are color coded lines all over the place. Inmates and prisoners are very aware that if they cross the yellow and black stuff on the ground and enter the officer area, deadly force is authorized.

Never had an issue.

Niiiice, right at the end before help arrives when the hands are firmly clenched around the perp's throat. :)

I can just hear the suspects attorney now..."the officer should be brought up on charges of excessive force. Law Enforcement Officers are only to use the force necessary to subdue the suspect, not choke them with both hands!"

I say use whatever you have to to go home at the end of your shift.

And like I tell my 19yo son, you'll appreciate this Dragoon, "old age and treachery will ALWAYS overcome youth and skill".

Good job to the officer in the video, it reminds me of my father to be honest.

I liked that myself. He was going to win the fight, no matter what. If that perp wanted to continue to fight, he was going pay pretty heavily.

Was the officer wearing a gun? Or was that a secure facility? It looked like the bad guy was grabbing for something on his belt.

Whitely said Witt doesnít appear to have violated any departmental policies during the incident. He said it isnít uncommon for suspects to be released from handcuffs while in the booking area, particularly if the officer plans to release them after the booking process is completed.

Pg 3 of the comments.

Secure facility.

Officer had secured his weapon.

Suspect had tried to choke the officer, after grabbing at the officer's holster.

That's a big dude to be tussling with anyway. Young and dumb, no wonder why this guy was in the jail to begin with. Definitely job security for the Correctional Staff!

Yup... I sent it to a hippie friend of mine (I have no idea why I still talk to her, because we argue constantly..) and the first thing she said "Does he really need to be choking him while he's on his back on the desk"...

Good job on his part beating the crap out of the punk.

I don't like however that it took so long for back up to arrive in a booking area. You'd think there would be more people in that part of the facility. Was it in the booking area? Looks like it.

I hope this officer doesn't get any flak for choking out this idiot.

WOW!!!

Armed inside a facility and on top of that you're by yourself and in order to use the computer you have to turn away from a suspect?

That's crazy.

Now that I look at the video you can see some responding officers do have guns on them.

Still crazy IMHO.

"According to the police report, Officer Witt tried to use his portable radio to call for help, but the microphone on his shirt had fallen off during the fight."

Ok that makes sense. He wasn't able to get a call out for help.

According to the comments (one of them apparently works w/ the guy), the Officer didn't have his gun, he had secured it.. probably per policy. I didn't see any firearms on anyone,.. but did see what looked like a few open holsters.

Oh SNAP!

This does remind me of my dad. He was a husky boy but could fight with the best of them.

Reminds me of Trailer Park Boys- Philadelphia Collins!

Great job... the officer had a few seconds early on where he wasn't clearly winning, but he was never close to losing !
And I'll bet that lockup is still better set up than at least 2/3s of the PDs out there.

0:38 is the game changer. He gets to the radio on the desk and delivers a right elbow.

Good job.

My only issue is that the Officer released his "compliance via airway control" manuver before the dickbag quit breathing for good. I'm glad he came out on top. Don't mess with the old coppers, they don't eff around.

Yup... He knew his radio was out and was cognizant enough to know where the desk radio was...

Of course, all in all, he could've done w/o the backup by the time it was all over. That dude clearly wasn't thinking when he went after that big dude, he couldn't even get his hands around him. Going by the times tamp, 08:17:57 fight starts, 08:17:59, stupid is realizing he probably bit off more than he could chew... 08:18:35 he's locking in the choke, First backup Officer arrives at 08:18:59

Winner, by choke.. . :)

Assuming the video is real time (it looks like it was), the fight went on for 1:10 from the time the kid jumped the counter to when backup arrived and the officer finally let go. I remember back to my wrestling days just how long that can feel. Nice work...

Obviously, this is a case of police brutality. The young man was raised in a broken home and we should take that into account. The policeman should never have treated him so roughly.

If you stop it at 1:25 you see one of the responding officers has it on his left side.

Stop it again at 1:26 you see the fourth officer (short guy) has one on his right side. Run it to 1:28 and he's standing by the open door and you can see it.

It was probably policy to lock up the weapon while in the secured area. Those responding officers were probably coming from an unsecured part of the building.
