Atheists have far better sex lives than religious people who are plagued with guilt during intercourse and for weeks afterwards, researchers have found. (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1388827/Atheists-better-sex-religious-followers-plagued-guilt.html)

So, religion or not, at least Atheists have that going for them.

The study clearly starts with the premise that ************, watching pornography, and casual sex makes for a better sex life.

I did not take that away as the premise. Those were listed among activities common across religious and irreligious groups, but they were measuring the sexual satisfaction based on the guilt experienced by the different groups after these activities.

I really donít get this. Why would someone be plagued with guilt afterwards?

Well, "better" is a subjective judgment. When I was an atheist, I thought I had a great sex life. It was all about abusing women for my own selfish pleasure. As a Christian, sex is about giving to your marriage partner. There is quite a difference.

Are you suggesting that for an atheist sex cannot be a meaningful act within a loving, monogamous relationship?

IMHO, the "sex talk" (and sexual discussion in general) is one of the things that many, MANY Christian parents fail at... I never got it. I had something close once when I was about 15, but by that point what I knew would probably have given my parents heart attacks

<< Also, 27 year old virgin (by choice).

:wavey::tongueout::rofl: Sorry, just kidding, it HAD to be asked....
I was reminded of the Chevy Chase "Spies like Us" movie, the Russian guy says "Every time I ask you a question and you don't answer, I cut off a finger". Chevy Chase asks "Yours or mine?"

I think that this is the result of a misunderstanding.

Someone noted that Athiests get FU__ed for all eternity, and confused that for a better sex life.

Their study seems consistent with what one would expect from reading the Bible. Humans are separated from God (spiritually dead) until quickened by the Holy Spirit, hence the lack of guilt in the atheist crowd. A believer has the Holy Spirit living in him. The law of God is written on his heart. When the believer does something contrary to one of God's holy laws, the response is guilt. Similar to feeling physical pain, such guilt is a sign that something is wrong.

'We did think that religion would have residual effects in people after they left but our data did not show this. That was a very pleasant surprise. The vast majority seem to shake it off and get on with their sexual lives pretty well,' Darrel told...
I thought this part was interesting. He interprets this as a good thing. I think something else is going on: The conscience was seared and coarsened to the point that the person is no longer detecting the Holy Spirit poking him and indicating that something is wrong and he needs to stop and go the other way (repent). The only thing they're "shaking off" is their chance at being quickened and being saved. Bravo.

As an aside, how 'bout this as an example of the writer's secular mindset leading him to a faulty prediction (that there would be residual effects) whereas if one reads and halfway understands the Bible, he'd predict this one correctly in about five seconds of thought? LOL

He added: 'Our data shows that people feel very guilty about their sexual behaviour when they are religious, but that does not stop them: it just makes them feel bad.
Doesn't stop them? So what? The immoral behaviors are probably reduced among people who feel guilt. It's Psychology 101 that a behavior's frequency will decrease when the behavior is followed by negative consequence. Therefore, I have to think these behaviors are at least reduced when people are spiritually alive enough to realize they're wrong and thus feel guilt.

Every human has physical desires and some will slip here and there. The believer, assuming he's being obedient, is striving to squash these sorts of behaviors. When he slips, he registers a big chunk of guilt. A spiritually dead person wouldn't register such guilt because, after all, there is no objective source of right and wrong in his world. He gets to make up the rules to suit his desires.

This isn't worth another thread, but on the OP's original link, there was a sidebar with a quick description of another research study. The following text was included:

All human brains shrink slightly with age and reduction in the size of the hippocampus has been linked to Alzheimer's.
But Protestants were found to have significant less atrophy, or wastage, in that area of the brain that Catholics, non-religious groups and born-again Protestants.
Participants who said that they had had life-changing religious experiences were also found to have large hipppocampus regions.
Experts hope that the findings might lead to preventative measures against brain deterioration.

I had to LOL at this one, especially the last quoted sentence. One of those jokers will probably get a $500k research project from NIH or somewhere else, when I can solve that problem right here, right now. Convert to a protestant denomination and avoid brain wastage! You atheists and Catholics in this forum are promoting brain wastage and need to be stopped before it's too late!!

Actually, I don't quite get what they're saying because they put "born-again" in the massive atrophy category, but then there's the following sentence about life-changing religious experiences. Still, I think it's funny.
