HI all,

Been wanting to get a .308 semi auto battle riffle ever since I read a great article about all the various ones available. I think I have my options narrowed down but wanted to get peoples feed back and other possible recommendations.

So far here are the contenders:

FNH SCAR 17s in FDE:

M1A with EBR conversion:

POF .308:

LWRC REPR:

I have shot each of these and every single one is a different experience. The FNH SCAR is somewhat of a front runner for me currently. Let me know yalls thoughts or other recomendations!

If I buy a 308, I'm buying the SCAR. Its head and shoulders above the competition.

that EBR conversion looks like a horrible thing to do to an M1A... haha

Walnut M1A Scout Squad... or perhaps the polymer OD.

Based upon your choices, LMT for a precision type, SCAR for a more Battle Type.

I want a less tacti-cool M1A, so that would be my choice.

I bought a PWS MK214 has the same muzzle break as the SCAR because FN uses PWS muzzle breaks and the PWS is the lightest amount of recoil I have ever felt in a .308

REPR or MWS would be my first choice of what has been mentioned so far in this thread.

Howver, if some comes out with a lower for the 17S that takes 308 PMAGs it would jump to the top of the list for me.

I bought a RRA M4 It shoots fine and not to heavy. I got the flat top.
Good luck It uses FNFAL mags

Alright I am telling check out PWS, its alot lighter than a POF, its cheaper than a SCAR and most LWRC and it take PMAGS

that lmt mws is pretty nasty not going to lie. what makes it stand out ? I dont know much about it. I'll have to see if I can find one to shoot. The PWS is nice as well, but just doesnt "DO IT" for me.

If you can buy a SCAR 17 and don't, you have made the wrong choice. I've owned most of the .308 battle rifles at one time or another. The SCAR 17 is the best, in my opinion. It is short and light enough to clear a house. It's accurate enough for dmr work. It is standard military issue, so it's a proven system and there will be parts and accessories available for it for a long time.

The only legitimate complaint I've heard about it is limited availability of magazines, but they are much easier to find now. I have 16 factory mags for my two SCAR 17's, and the most I've paid for one is $40.

I hear yah. I'm so intrigued by it because it's so different and i feel a huge step forward from a regular ar platform based gun. A lot of goodies in that lil package. And magazine price are not of concern to me.....I mean I am looking to spend $2500+ for a rifle so why would a $20-40 magazine be the deal breaker?

It's like buying a Ferrari and complaining that paying over $1k for tires is too much.

The SCAR is amazing and I wish I had one of those as well.

This. It's about as utilitarian and headache-free a .308 as you'll find.

I was thinking of the same thing but in more of a SPR/DMR role. I stumbled upon the GA Precision semi auto .308. Cheaper than everything you posted short of the M1A and awesome accuracy. Check them out.

i like the Sage EBR with an 18" barrel. its heavy though. my favorite by far is the M1a in a more standard configuration.

id build one off of a LRB Arms M25 receiver. takes the scope mount issues away from the M14 platform. then go precision build with a heavy barrel and JAE stock, or go tactical with a Vltor modstock and an 18" barrel. i also like the McMillan folder.

If you want a true .308 "battle rifle" (as opposed to more of a precision rifle), I'd recommend the Noveske Leonidas, either with a 12" barrel or a 14.5" barrel. .308s are heavy rifles and a battle rifle needs to be wieldable.

ETA: I don't like that it doesn't take PMAGs. Looks like it takes Armalite mags. Aside from the weight, the LMT MWS appears to be good to go. I'm big on weight reduction though and would almost accept the Armalite mags in order to have a Noveske rifle with a 12"-14.5" barrel.

My only problem with the Noveske, and this is comming from a huge fan, who owns several, is the price.

For the price, a SCAR is probably the better/more reliable rifle. And they're almost equal in price.I love my AR's and I won't trade to a SCAR 16, because I cant justify the extra price for a piston. But when you level the playing field of price, I don't know that I would still select a DI rifle.

I think the only thing that held me back on a SCAR was the recip handle. I'd have to change how I hold things to avoid hand/handle interactions.

I heard that the SCAR folding stocks tend to break. Not sure if it's true but I'd thoroughly look into it before buying one.

I've heard that, but never seen it. There is an aftermarket metal replacement for the folding mechanism for anyone who is concerned about it.

After further consideration, I'd have to recommend a FN FAL by DSA. They make models with shorter barrels, folding stocks, railed handguards, and all kinds of other practical accessories.

Here's a great FAL photo thread. http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=4274

Based upon your choices, LMT for a precision type, SCAR for a more Battle Type.

This is great advice, the LMT is a very accurate shooter and tough as nails, the SCAR truly is battle proven.. Your choice.

I have tested both and am buying heavy SCARS for the agency, and I want an LMT for personal use i think there is more accuracy in the LMT and like the ergos better. The trigger is worth going with the LMT alone.

Out of those I'd go POF (I have one) then LMT...

Check out Larue also.I own one of those too. Both the POF and Larue are great weapons!
