The young Americans in the video are tremendous examples of the maximum concentration, skill and bravery required to fly airplanes off of and onto an aircraft carrier.

This is unnerving, landing with deck pitching 30 feet, at night, low on fuel. Incredible.

Turn on your sound and go full screen.

These videos show the difference between Naval Aviation and any other kind. The links below are two outstanding videos about F-18 carrier operations aboard the USS Nimitz during weather that causes a severely pitching deck, which you can see in the videos. It's more dangerous than most combat missions and the tension in the pilots and crew is very apparent.

(This is part of a whole series telecast on PBS about carrier life. It was very good. If they run it again, itís worth watching. Pat)

I once read an article written by an F14 pilot that described to us civilians how to simulate landing on a carrier deck.

He said to put a postage stamp, sticky side up, in the middle of the living room floor. Then run and dive headfirst into the room and try to lick the stamp before any other part of our body touched the floor. If you could get the stamp before anything else hit, then we could probably be trained to land an aircraft on a carrier.

For an additional challenge, he said we should turn off the lights.
