Be safe out there. We are all targets. You can get killed just for being. This was flat out assassination.

A Bexar County deputy sheriff was apparently ambushed and killed in a hail of gunfire while sitting in a marked unit waiting for a red light on the East Side early Saturday.

San Antonio, like any major city has it's bad areas. This is one of them. Most of San Antonio's bad areas are "Barrio" this area is one of the two or three very small "Ghetto" areas of town.

Prayers for the deputies family.

Since we're talking about Texas, I'm hoping there will be some type of large-scale response, where thay go through that whole stinking area with a fine-toothed comb, and lock up anyone that looks at 'em funny. They can't let this go without some type of response. Doing so would just be begging for more of the same.

Godspeed, Sarge.

I have heard reports that Mexican drug gangs were threatening to execute US LEO personnel; could this be the opening of that offensive???

I dont know, I have no information at this point that isnt in the news...but I do have a knowledge of the area as an LEO.

So my thoughts are...

This is a (the) black area of town. San Antonio doesnt have much of a black population but we do have two small areas of town that are real rough where the black community lives. This was one of those areas.

So my instincts tell me this was NOT hispanic related. However, the other side of that is, This is San Antonio and EVERY area here is hispanic. So it could be. (The majority population here is hispanic)

Also, this was in the city limits of San Antonio (towards the edge of town in that direction) and this was a county deputy. (in transit to a county call) I dont think it was a "hit." He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

On the other side of all of that, If an LEO and "Cartel" war was going to heat up, San Antonio, after the boarder towns, is a ground zero city. If it went down, We are one of the places at the top of the list where it would happen.

Just thoughts. I dont have a clue. I am angry. I am sure we will find out more soon enough.

Be careful out there. It may get like it was in the 70's. Many officer deaths were on "ambush calls". We would get a false call and there would be several @#$% there waiting with weapons. It was premeditated capital murder when it worked. :steamed:

My department was lucky. We never lost an officer between 1946 and 1992.

Rest in peace deputy, know that your assassins will be dealt with.

Many years ago when similar shootings were going on we developed defensive tactics, the one I never quit doing was to NEVER get yourself stuck in traffic where you could not quickly move if/when the situation did not look right. Stay alert.

You don't see many ambush attacks like this in S.A. At least I haven't heard of many. Would be a little different if he was responding to a call and got shot at while on the scene of another crime. Everything I have heard so far said he was a very good man and officer. I know he was in a patrol car but apparently was a detective at some point of his career. My initial thought was that it was a hit from someone he put away. We do have a strong presents of Mexican Mafia and want to be's in this area.

Dave Smith, a retired Arizona State Police lieutenant and speaker, writer and law enforcement trainer, said Vann's death is part of a two-year national trend. Ambush-style police deaths are still so rare that experts don't know what's causing them, said Smith, who refers to the trend of people going into the community and “hunting police officers” as the country's “war on cops.”

While certainly LE has been subject to ambush attacks, it has been a long long time where multiple suspects are involved. Even the 3 officers killed in Attascosa County (one county south of Bexar) it was only one gunman. The intersection is a busy one and high highly traveled.

I spent 18 hours Saturday and 10 hours yesterday running down leads. There are lots of agencies involved and everyone is really working well together. We had over 20 task force officers working.

Reward money is up over 50,000 so far. When my guys get back tomorrow, they will probably pick up information at the schools. These kids don't know how to keep quiet thankfully.

Stay Safe

ps Dragoon. Figured you would remember the attacks in NY. I was living there then. It was scary times.

Hopefully they do the old school "round-up" where they send out 100+ officers and grab every gang banging piece of trash in sight and find a reason to bring them into the hotel for a few days. Usually gives snitches a good reason to start talking.

Local personal injury lawyer Wayne Wright just kicked in $25,000 reward money to raise the total to $77,000. I managed to get $5,000 committed by Texas Municipal Police Association on Sunday and am looking for another $5,000 from local national corp that is headquartered here.

Figure if my regular job keeps me in the office and I can't be back out out on the streets, I can do something else.

May he rest in peace.. I doubt it was a Cartel hit unless he was somehow involved with them. The CDG and Zetas are too busy fighitng each other for territory in the Northern state of Tamaulipas. Border Patrols along the Rio Grande are far easier targets by the Cartels using a sniper on the other side of border.

http://smallwarsjournal.com/blog/2011/06/mexican-cartel-tactical-note-2/

Speculation...just like my opinion would be.

Again, it was not my agency and I am not involved in the investigation. All I have is a knowledge of the area and conversation with people in that agency. I honestly think if it was cartel/mexican drug war related, there would be some kind of "calling card"...it kind of defeats the point if they dont let people know they did it.

Again, rough black area of town, with black gangs. It could have been the Amish but chances are....

...and one more time. I dont know anything, I am not involved and I am not a trained homicide investigator. I just think (and I have been at that very intersection twice in the last two days) that if a "hey lets shoot a cop" random/gang event were to happen, that intersection would be a likely place, among many, for just such an event.

Whatever happend, I feel we will find out.

Also to add, this is just so much worse than the bad stuff that tends to happen to us.

It makes sense when an officer gets shot by a man with gun on a man with gun call.

It makes sense when an officer gets shot by a man with a gun on a traffic stop and the guy has a felony warrant.

In makes sense when an officer gets killed in a traffic crash.

The point is, as tragic as those things are, we all know that is what we face. The pain doesnt go away but even the horrid answer " A crap bag did a crap bag thing..." is an answer.

In this case, we have nothing. We dont know why. We have no answer. Sgt. Vann didnt even get a chance to fight. he was just sitting there and we all want to know something. This is scary. You cant plan for this. You cant workshop this one in your head with "what if?" We are already so hyper vigilant and see the world in a way most dont understand. This cant be countered. This cant really be trained for. To just be sitting at a light and to be shot dead. Alive one second...dead the next.

like most things, I think a lot of people dont want it to turn out to be as simple as "lets kill a cop...." I fear it was.

I come back to this thread to read the new replies and it still makes my blood boil. I didn't know the man, have been away from the law enforcement community for 25+ years. All you have said Rabbi is correct, eloquently put.

But as you said, this may have been nothing more than a target of opportunity shooting with "let's kill a cop" as motivation.

And that, sir, is the hardest part of all of this to digest.

Agreed.... When they are allowed to spew their hostility and filth in an open forum, they work themselves, other losers, up into a rabid frenzy. It's really nothing more than an orgy of hate that continues to fuel itself. That mentality grows, and the people who keep pushing that hate just fan the flames. At some point someone stops talking, because it's no longer a sufficient way to express their malice, and instead they do something....

It happens. We just had an OIS a month or so ago with the shooter being a guy in his mid-40's who just pulled out a gun in the middle of the street after a car accident. The guy just pulls out a knife, stabs the other driver, and when the cops come, he pulls out a gun and starts shooting. The cops won and he was DRT but it was never really explained.

One of the things I always taught my guys was to play the what if game while on patrol. One of the what if's I gave them is what if you are at a stoplight and the car next to you the guy pulls a gun and points it at you.

That not only caused them to have a plan it made them constantly be aware of cars and people around them. One of the things i always stressed is that while they were in uniform they could NEVER daydream or let their attention drift from the here and now. Constant vigilance is the cost of being able to go home at the end of the shift.

It pays to have a good imagination, Dragoon. Good on you for reinforcing that. Sitting around thinking about "what would happen if..." doesn't always pay off, but when it does it pays off HUGE.

Trying to get our bleeding-heart, left-learning, liberal, tree-hugging administrators to buy into this philosphy has been mind-numbing. We haven't had physical, hands-on self defense training in 8 years because of the dependency on being complacent.

It pays to have a plan instead of trying to come up with one in the heat of the moment. Like I have always said, having a plan and modifying it as needed on the fly, beats the hell out of trying to formulate a plan when the SHTF.

It may not save you, but at least it will give you a fighting chance.

In support of what you posted;

If you fail to plan, your plan is to fail.

But then again Murphy is a very vigilant old ba$!&*d

41 years old..... does that rule out a possible gang initiation?

Not really, there is 1 particular gang that started in that area that is very capable of doing something like this, and a large number of them are older. I will not drop the "Gangs" name on a forum, because I know what they are capable of. I am not saying they had anything to do with this, as I have no clue.

I upgraded my thinking years ago to a "WHEN / THEN" mindset. To me, it's not "IF" something is gonna happen, but "WHEN"......Both on and off duty....But as we all know, even if we do everything right, it can still turn out wrong.......

Here locally, LE has a "cop no stop" rule. LE doesn't stop for red lights to wait. They treat them as yield signs, flip on the lights with a chirp of the siren and proceed when clear. Minimizes exposure to standing vehicles at intersections.

Really? there must be hundreds of people calling in to report the officer running red

If someone is shooting at me, there is a no stop rule in effect wherever I am. I don't care if it is a train track, one way street or even a dead end. I'm getting out of the killzone!!!

Nope, small town America. Village is 2,000 population; nearest city is 6,000. LE is exempt from red lights and stop lights by statute per the county prosecutor.

We had the same policy when I was an agent. The boss said that traffic laws were only a guideline and that as long as I was on duty I could exercise discretion when punching lights as long as I didn't do anything truly stupid or put the public at risk.

And, BTW, the gun used was not an MP-15. Trust me - I traced the gun used (PM me for my office number and I'll gladly help your agency in the future). Won't say/can't say any more about the actual gun so please don't ask.

The Sheriff's dept. says they have a ballistic match to the suspects M&P 15. Also said they found loaded magazines around the house that added up to 2000 rounds and think he was prepared for a shootout but SWAT surprised him while he was asleep.

I think he is mixed up in recent events, His post is talking about the guy that was shot by SWAT in AZ.

Does anyone know if formal charges have been filed on the suspect?

If I got all that reward money, I would just sign it over to the wife of the Deputy

The gun that Scott is probably talking about was a gun that we seized early on in the investigation that turned out not to be the rifle involved. I think that we seized that gun on the Same day of the shooting as well as another one the day after. Both were in possession of felons.

Well it is a good thing to get guns away from felons even if they are not connected to a crime.

The post about the M&P 15, sounds alot like the AZ SWAT shooting, actually almost identical.
